Birth of a Nation Compared to Modern Day

I know I’m extremely late about this topic but I still feel the need to talk about it. The day that Birth of a Nation came out, I went and saw it. I just want to point out a few things that I saw.

First off, I like that the movie starts off with Nat Turner, a slave rebellion leader, learning how to read, especially the bible. When he grew up to teach it at other plantations, he noticed that the other slaves were getting mistreated terribly and also being taught the word of God..WRONG. That brings me my first point. People will tell and even teach you something wrong just because they don’t think you’ll research or look more into it. The slaves were being taught to obey their master because it was supposedly in the Bible, until Nat Turner came to them to preach the actual word of God. That showed me that when you start speaking truthfulness, people will try to shut you up and even kill you; which brings me to my next point.

Nat’s master was around his age and they somewhat grew up together until the little boy’s father passed away and made Nat go work in the cotton field. Since the two had known each other since they were kids, the master was a little more lenient on Nat, until he had something to prove to his fellow white owners that he can be aggressive.

When Nat went to the other plantations to preach, not only did he notice that they were being taught the wrong word of God but he saw how terrified and in bad shape the slaves were. It made him look as if he was being treated way better than them, even though he was still a slave. That’s another correlation to today’s society; just because you may not face adversity, abuse and discrimination, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t go own…like police brutality against black people.

This movie had quite a few comparisons to modern society like “Where’s your pass at, you don’t belong over here?” translating to black people getting pulled over by the police and getting asked  “where is your driver’s license [pass]? What are you doing in this neighborhood.” Another, when the slaves were fed up and wanted their freedom, equal to today’s society of US wanting to speak up and speak out about issues  like the police and even the government wanting to shut us up. As I said before, when you start speaking truthfulness (Nat’s preaching), people who are against will try to shut you up, an example is Dr. Sebi; the man who had cured AIDs and some forms of cancer and all of sudden he dies, but that’s another story.

When I was in elementary, middle and high school, I had never heard about Nat Turner. The only abolitionist that I heard of was Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth. Maybe there were more but that’s all I REALLY remember. I wonder if I or many others didn’t learn about Nat because he rebelled against slave owners and the other abolitionists didn’t (that I know of).

Analyzing my childhhood learning, it seems that we, or maybe just the people in my class, didn’t learn about Nat Turner because the individuals in charge of the curriculum (board members or whatever) didn’t want to teach us that rebelling against higher authority, per se, we’re okay. BUT back then African Americans valued their freedom so much it was crucial for them to start fighting back, just like Nat and a few others during that century.

I find it extremely odd that this film flopped during the opening weekend. The film only grossed $7.1 million and came in 6th place with other competing movies. All in all, it’s still a good film to see, because of its comparison with modern society and I encourage people to go see it.

Organized Church Burning?

Another hate crime has occurred again, against African Americans. If you don’t know, Here’s a brief story on it. Tuesday November 1, in Greenville, Mississippi; a church by the name of Hopewell MB Church was set on fire around 10:00 at night. To add fuel to fire (literally) the words “Vote Trump” was spray painted on the side of the church. I have family in Greenville and some visited there. The 110 year old church is historic. My great great grandmother attended the church, way back when. I’m sure the people in the community are upset about how this historically black church was targeted as a hate crime.

When I first read about this story, I saw it on Facebook and a reporter named Erin Pickens in Jackson, Mississippi  posted about it. In the words of one of my old classmates who commented on the article:

“What year is it ?😞” –Shelby Emerson

But really though, what year is it that people are still burning churches like it’s the 1950’s or 60’s? It wasn’t acceptable back then but it was more common, with 10 churches being set on fire between 1950-1970, that was targeted to blacks.

Just last year, a predominately black church in Charlotte, North Carolina was set on fire on June 25, 2015. A day before that fire, a church in Macon, Georgia was set on fire. Even though The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina wasn’t burned down, it was a hate crime as well, with 9 people being shot and killed by a white supremacist.

Now to switch focuses a bit, its clear that who ever did the Greenville church fire, is a Trump supporter. Even though Trump may not have organized this, it’s making his campaign look bad due to the crime being committed in his honor, so to speak. He could have organized this for more publicity. WHO KNOWS, Hillary could have organized it to make Trump look bad. Let’s face it, both candidates who are running for presidency aren’t saints, which brings me to my next blog post: Still Vote. Be on the look out for that soon.

But really…when will the hate crimes stop? Not even just against blacks, but Latinos, Hispanics, Muslims, etc. Especially doing a hate crime to a church!!! That’s a place of worship, no matter what the specific religion is.

Well this is just one of many rants. Let me know your thoughts!!

Traveling Along the Caribbean Sea

So a couple of weeks ago (August 20-27) I took a cruise along the Caribbean Sea and it was AMAZING. I went with a few family members and one of my best friends. It was a great experience to be outside of the country and able to view different parts of the world and mother nature’s creation.

While In Jamaica, we got off of our ship and took a tour around the town of Montego Bay and even though it wasn’t the best part of town, the culture was different from what I’ve seen. So on the bus, we pull up to one of our stops and a guy knocks on my window, and asks if I want to buy some tree (weed) and he holds it in his hand showing it to me.  I mean I’ve had people offer me weed but just blatantly showing it to me in public was bold and hilarious! From what the tourist told me, the people in Jamaica can walk around  with up to 2 oz of weed on them. Now selling it, I’m not sure but several residents there didn’t hesitate on trying to sell us some lol. So any who, me and my best friend went to the beach and they were selling food…at the beach…under a tent…like it was a family reunion. AND had a DJ. It pretty much looked like a family reunion at a beach. Music playing, the scent of “mari-ja-wana” in the air and people dancing of course. It felt very welcoming. The water wasn’t as blue, it was more of a dirty color but overall, I liked it and it was my second favorite trip while on the cruise out of the three. Everything was “irie” meaning “alright” or “cool”. (Jamaica pics below):

The second trip was Grand Cayman, Cayman Island. This was probably  the least fun. Luckily me and my friend signed up for the snorkeling excursion. FYI, I CAN’T SWIM, and I survived, YAYYY!!! But the water was gorgeous and while snorkeling, trying not to panic and die, I saw quite a few fishes. From the Dory fish to the normal fish. This was probably the most fun, yet nervous part of the trip. I’m glad that I experienced it, even though I can’t swim and was freaking out 60% of the time.  Check out the pics (unfortunately I didn’t get any snorkeling pics).

Last trip of the cruise, but not the least, certainly the best was MEXICOOOOO!! I really liked it. We arrived in Cozumel (Puerto Mayo). Me and best friend walked down the strip that had a bunch of stores on it, then took a cab to a beach that was is Punta Norte and I’m guessing the beach was called Club Cozumel Caribe. I tried snorkeling again, which wasn’t as nerve wrecking and saw more pretty fish. The water was of course amazing!! Let’s talk about the people!! SO after we left the beach, we took a cab back to the strip and did a little shopping, FREAKIN TEQUILA…EVERYWHERE. We went into a flea market, a SHOT. Next shop, ANOTHER SHOT, with coke. Third shop, A SHOT. Now I know they were bribing us with shots to bring us in the stores but it didn’t work! We’ll take our shot and then be on our way lol!! More places offered us shots but we declined because we knew that we would have to spend more time in another store and we didn’t have time. (Mexico pics below):

Overall, I would travel to Jamaica and Mexico again. Cayman Islands, I could do without. I recommend traveling outside the county to ANYONE.

When I said I couldn’t swim, I also meant that I couldn’t go under water as well (childhood experience). But as you can see, my best friend taught me to go under water.

For me, this trip was about stepping outside of my comfort zone, from traveling outside the country, to going fully under water, and even snorkeling!  Why not explore outside of your comfort zone?  Live a little 🙂

Do Opposites Attract?

There is a saying that goes “opposites attract” but sometimes in the long run it doesn’t always work out. If you are opposite of someone then you two have different views and that may be (but not limited too): growing up an only child versus with siblings, growing up with both parents versus a single parent and even having an active childhood versus not being active at all as a child. I’m not saying that opposites attracting won’t EVER work out. What I’m saying is, it can cause complications.

When being in a relationship, everyone wants to be loved differently. Some people may like spending time with each other as a way of showing love and that’s it; then there are some folks that like gifts and other knit knacks to show that they are being thought of in a love matter. Both of those can correlate to a person’s childhood with their parents being around or not being around. For example, someone who may have grew up with one parent may cherish spending time with someone versus buying them things all the time. On the flip side, a person who grew up with both parents may have that one parent or parents who only gave them money or bought them things and then sent them on their way–that person may like gifts much better than spending time OR that person may cherish both but of course may be better than the other.

I’ve realized that being in a relationship requires some knowledge of each other’s backgrounds and of course COMMUNICATION. Without the two, there will be BIG problems. Opposites can attract in some cases but both parties have to be willing to alter ways that are caused by their childhood.

I’m no expert, I’m jus speaking from experience.

The Simple Things, Like School Supplies

It’s the simple things in life that make you appreciate being a kid again. From watching cartoons while eating Froot Loops cereal, to playing UNO, and even buying school supplies makes you reminisce

Yesterday, I went into Walmart to do some grocery shopping and I came across the school supply section. Now just a brief history, when I was a kid I use to LOVE school supplies, like Lisa Frank folders and notebooks, colorful pens. I even liked markers, crayons and those cute little planners. So while I’m in Walmart, looking at all the supplies, all memories started coming back to me. It made me realize that I have no reason to go school supply shopping anymore. It use to make me happy as a kid to go, something that simple. Now that I’ve graduated high school AND college, I don’t get to have that pleasure of going anymore. Maybe once I have children I’ll be able to enjoy the fun in it again, and even then my children may not find that much enjoyment in it.

The moral of my story is this; enjoy the simple things while they last, like your kid’s first words or them walking; or you not having any responsibilities; and even  buying supplies that remind you of your youth and when the only thing that mattered was school and not paying bills.

Cherish the simple things.

A War Has Started

Last week has been very eventful and not in a good way. Tuesday night July 5, Alton Sterling was shot by the police in Baton Rogue outside of a local market. Less than 24 hours later Philando Castile was shot by a Minnesota police officer in his girlfriend’s car while they were being stopped for a broken tail light. After he was shot, his girlfriend immediately started broadcasting it. That’s TWO killings of black men by police officers in one week.

More recently, FIVE police officers were at a peaceful protest in Dallas, Texas Thursday July 7. The shooter—Micah X Johnson, a black man with no criminal history, who was an army reservist that spent some time in Afghanistan.. Before he was killed by a robot bomb, he said he was outraged with the killings of the black men that occurred last week.

The next day ( July 8) a police officer was killed in Ballwin, Mo; which is a small suburb community outside of St. Louis, my hometown.

Black people are fed up. Fed up with being mistreated, discriminated against, KILLED! Even with body cameras and bystanders recording the last few killings in the past 2 years, the police are still getting off the hook for these killings of black people, NOT just men but women as well.

At this point, the question is: what else can we do? We’ve protested, marched, recorded, read our rights to know what to do in these circumstances, complied with the law, been upfront and honest when asked if we have any weapons on us and STILL, we get killed. So is the answer to the question to keep fighting, protesting and recording OR fight back the police and kill them like Micah Johnson did ? I’m not saying killing the police is right but until there is equality….its going to be a war out here is the real until our voice is heard and we are treated with the same respect and rights as the next race.

#AltonSterling

WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING?? Another black man being killed by a white police officer is nothing new to the WORLD.

Alton Sterling, a 37 year old man, was selling CDs outside of a local Baton Rogue market when he was approached by two white officers. The police got a call saying that Alton was outside of the market, threatening people with a gun. There is footage of the incident circulating around social media. In the video, you can see the officers tackled him to the round and one officer yelling “gun” (but there was no gun in sit from the victim” and then you hear and see the office fire 6 shots into Alton’s chest. Talk about GRAPHIC.

The store owner, who was a witness to the crime said that the police tazed Alton and pushed him on the silver car. Then they tackled him to the ground. He says that Alton didn’t reach for a gun and it was not visible when he was on the ground. The store owner says that the gun was only visible when the police officer reached in Alton’s pocket and got it out, AFTER he had been shot. He adds that, from what he saw, the police didn’t have to shoot Alton and the police could have handled it differently. All Alton was trying  to do was find out why he was being arrested.

Celebrities have expressed their concerns about the incident. Cardi B from Love and Hip Hop New York went on a rant saying “If you fucking scared of a black man laying  on the floor, you shouldn’t be a cop, you a coward.”  Actor Jesse Williams had a series of tweets on how he felt about the incident. Even rapper The Game shared a long post on Instagram saying that we need to do more than create hashtags on social media; we need to take action!

Alton’s family spoke out about the crime of their loved one and you can see his 15  year-old son breaking down on television. It was heartbreaking to see him cry and even sadder to see the mother of his son try to hold back her tears while talking about the crime.

In my opinion, this is getting ridiculous. By “this” I mean the killing of our black people by police officer AND by other black men. It seems that since black people are killing black people, the police see that it’s okay to kill them/us as well. These killings have spiraled out of control and now that there is footage supporting the injustice, justice is still not being served. When will it stop? Will it ever stop?
