Kehlani “It Was Good Until It Wasn’t” Album Review

Kehlani dropped her 3rd album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t and per usual, she didn’t disappoint. From features with Jhene Aiko and Lucky Daye to her dope interludes and outro.

Kehlani is one of those artists who isn’t 100% mainstream but you know who she is. She hasn’t had a top 10 or 20 song on the charts but she’s still respected. Yes, she’s been brought up in the media mainly for her relationships with Kyrie Irving, then PARTNEXTDOOR, and as recently as YG. But don’t let her relationships overshadow her great music, if anything let them be motivation for you to listen to her music and find out some tea on why the relationships didn’t last.

Anywho, the titles of the song are self-explanatory. “Toxic” is about being in a toxic relationship or situationship; “Change Your Life” is about changing a man or woman’s (because Kehlani is sexually fluent) life and uplifting them and making things more positive for them.

Can we talk about the skit “Belong to the Streets” and how it goes into “Everybody Business?” It’s plain and simple; people will talk crazy about you without even knowing the whole situation in which they are talking about. Prime example, her past relationships and people saying she cheated on Kyrie with PARTY. “I Hate The Club” is about hating the club but wanting to go because you want to see someone you’re interested in. Every other song is straightforward. What was special about this album was her “Outro” freestyle song, which is by her friend and artist Lexii Alijai who passed away suddenly earlier this year. She was also on Kehlani’s 2015 mixtape You Should Be Here.

For those who aren’t fans of Kehlani, can you give her a chance before judging her by her past relationships? She may be a toxic Taurus but she makes GOOD music and deserves some credit that she doesn’t receive.

If you listened to the album, what are your thoughts?

Toodles y’all!

Let’s Talk About Summer Walker’s New Album “Over It”

If you’ve been living under a rock, Summer Walker released her first album Over It on October 4 and it’s gained a lot of attention and even charted. The album is the “biggest debut album from a female R&B artist in over 10 years.” That’s big! Not sure what the exact numbers are but from the looks of it, it seemed highly anticipated from its recognition.

Side bar: Summer KILLED her feature on Rick Ross album Port of Miami in the the song “Summer Reign.”

As of today, her album is #2 on the RnB and Hiphop charts. Majority of her songs have charted as well.

Speaking of which, let’s talk about her songs and features. She opens up the album with the self-titled album name “Over It” and in the song she says she needs a guy who can handle her. Men often say that women are out of control and she’s over the fact that women have to be tamed. She wants a guy who can handle her, flaws and all.

Summer gets Bryson Tiller on her “Playing Games” extended version. The song is self-explanatory, dudes be playing games and Summer speaks on how us women just want them to pick up the phone for us, quit stunting on us and even show us off. She also was a regular version without Bryson but the extended version is better.

In the song “Come Thru” she sampled Usher “You Make Me Wanna” and even gets him featured on the song. Summer wants her boo thang to come thru so she can put it on him. They killed this song!! Hopefully she’ll drop it as a single, even though it’s already charted.

“Fun Girl” is one honest ass song. She talks about how this guy looks at her as just a friend and even told her that she wasn’t built right. In so many words, he told her she didn’t have a body and he thought she was onlygood for just her body, being a “fun girl”, a fuck buddy. It’s sad when you hear things like that and imagine Summer channeling that hurt into a song. I’m sure dude is probably slapping himself right now lol.

“Tonight” is probably one of the sexiest songs on the album. She talks about being busy and how she can’t wait to get back home to bae and have some “quality time” with him. Speaking of that quality time, Summer got 6lack on her song “Like That” as they talk to their partners about what they like in the bedroom; another great feature.

“Just Might Be” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR has got to be one the funniest/realistic songs on her album as she talks about how it’s hard for her to find love and she questions if she may be a hoe. EVERY woman has thought there was something wrong with them because they couldn’t find love. When you finally find love, you deal with a guy who wants so much out of you  and you deliver, but he doesn’t hold up his end. Summer talks about that in “Stretch You Out” featuring A Boogie With The Hoodie. She said she’s not going to stress you out but instead, see what she can get from you, “stretch you out.” Once fed up, Summer realizes that she doesn’t have the patience or tears to deal with a guy’s nonsense anymore. She realizes that she’s over the dude in “Off Of You.”

One of my favorite songs on the album is “I’ll Kill You” featuring Jhene Aiko. Both ladies talk about how they’ve found love and how they’ve waited so long for it and they will kill any woman who tries to interfere with that relationship.

It’s safe to say that Summer killed her debut album. Her new boyfriend London On Da Track produced majority of the album and I’m not complaining! This album was made out of love or lust and I’m for it.
