[DELUX Mag] DJ sheBEATZ Talks Being a Woman in the DJ Industry

A few weeks ago, I was granted the opportunity to interview a talented Dj named sheBEATZ and she is a WOMAN, which is still kind of rare in the DJ industry.

The DJ industry is huge, but female DJs are rare to come by. St. Louis has just a few of them and each of them bring something different to their mix. DELUX got the opportunity to talk to one of the few female DJs, sheBEATZ, about her love for music, the male dominated industry, and the level of support there is in the DJ industry.

DELUX: How old were you when you first fell in love with music?

DJ sheBEATZ: I was probably like 5. My parents used to throw basement parties and my dad had a set up of two cassette players. So I could load like four songs and fade the volume–he showed me. I did that for years and I began making mix CDs, making sure the songs fit whatever theme I created. I’ve played instruments and I’ve danced all the way through high school. I stopped being so active in the arts in college but I would always jam out to my old CDs I made in high school.

DELUX: What inspired you to do music/become a DJ?

DJ sheBEATZ: Music is what inspired me to DJ. My love for it. Also, while I was in college I was trying to find a medium. I went into journalism because I thought I wanted to write about it, I got into radio because I thought I wanted to talk about it, and then finally after grad school and going out in STL, I realized I NEEDED to play it. STL was missing my vibe, so I decided to fix that.

Women’s Month: Supa Cent Makes Another Milli in Less Than An Hour

Here’s some woman appreciation:

CONGRATULATIONS to New Orleans native, business woman and Insta-famous Star Supa Cent, whose real name is Raynell Stewart, for making $1.36 million in less an hour!! Yes, an hour! BUT this isn’t her first time making a milli in a day.

If you aren’t familiar with her business, she owns a cosmetic line and her Crayon Case is a hot commodity andddd it is cute! She got her fame for making funny Instagram stories and having a huge following, especially from her hometown New Orleans.

Back in November, On Cyber Monday, Supa generated $1 million in 90 minutes!! Just last week, Supa held a “Taxmas” sale for her online website and made everything 40% off and that’s how she made $1.36 million in under 60 minutes.

Supa is killing the Black Entrepreneur game, not to mention she is 9 months pregnant and is bound to drop that baby any day now. She was running a business while pregnant, now THAT’S Black Girl Magic.

Women’s Month: Regina King Appreciation

With this being Women’s History Month, I decided to dedicate a post someone who’s been on the screens since I could remember. Let’s take a moment to idolize and appreciate Ms. Regina King. She’s a prime example of “Started From The Bottom,” when it comes to film.

Let us start from the beginning. Her first starring role was “227” as Brenda Jenkins.

Then she went on to play a small role in Boyz N Da Hood in 1991, which was directed by John Singleton. This was/is a classic movie that she played a ghetto girl in 😂

Then in 1993, she co-starred with Janet Jackson, 2Pac and Joe Torry in another classic film directed by John Singleton titled Poetic Justice. Another ghetto role but she was entertaining to say the least. She was the real friend who keeps it real with you.

A third classic film that Regina King was part of was Friday, which was written by Ice Cube. This was just two years after Poetic Justice. She stayed pretty busy during the 1990s.

Regina switched back to the her tv role days and had recurring roles on shows such as “Leap of Faith,” “24,” “Southland” and “Shameless.” She got an even bigger role in “The Boondocks,” playing the voices of Huey and Riley from 2005-2014.

Regina had another recurring role in “American Crime” WHICH got her an Emmy!!

Another favorite of mine was the Netflix Original movie Seven Seconds. Regina played a mourning mom trying to solve her son’s hit and run case, which was caused by the New York Police Department. She had sleepless nights and even stalked the home of the guy involved. She did a stellar job, which landed her ANOTHER Emmy.

More recently, like weeks ago, Regina got her FIRST Oscar for her supporting role in the James Baldwin novel turned film, If Beale Street Could Talk. She played a mother who’s son was wrongly incarcerated for the rape of a white woman. She remained supportive and calm throughout the process even though it was stressful.

To say that Ms. Regina King has came a long way would be an understatement. So, we’ll just say SHE DID THAT!!

I’m happy for this beautiful black queen and I’m excited to see what else she brings to the movie screens and tv screens. What is your favorite Regina King movie or show?

It’s Women’s History Month!!

March is dedicated to Women, specifically the history they’ve made. Women have came a long way from not being able to work, to having low-class jobs to being CEOs of companies. For black women, the struggle has been even more real. History is STILL being made with black women being the “first” to be in a high position of power. BUT it’s been said that Black Women are the top entrepreneurs AS WE SPEAK, and are continuing to grow!!

This month, I’ll be highlighting women who’ve made history or just women who simply need some shine.

Speaking of highlighting women, Paper Magazine released their cover for their March issue, which included Black Women in Hip Hop. It included interviews from artists such as Saweetie, Dreezy, Rico Nasty, City Girls, Yung Miami, Melii, Malibu Miitch, Bali Baby, Bri Steves, Kamaiyah, Cuban Doll and Asian Doll.

Let’s Talk Boomerang on BET

So, we’re five episodes in to BET’s show “Boomerang” and it’s addressed soooooo many millennial issues. If you haven’t seen the show or know what it’s about, it’s the spinoff show to the movie Boomerang, featuring Eddie Murphy, Halle Berry, Robin Givens, Martin Lawrence, David Alan Grier and other famous faces.

The movie is about Marcus Graham, played be Eddie Murphy, who’s a lady man and he runs game on them in order to have sex with them. (Typically guy shit). He gets a taste of his own medicine when a woman by the name of Jacqueline Broyer, played by Robin Givens, does the same to him. Eventually he catches on to her game and becomes interested in another woman named Angela, played by Halle Berry, who is more his speed. Fast forward, they live happily ever after.

Fast forward again, on the show Boomerang Marcus and Angela have a daughter named Simone Graham, played by Tetona Jackson. She works for her dad’s marketing agency but she wants to make a way on her own. Her friends Bryson Broyer, played by Tequan Richmond (Jacquline’s son), and Crystal Garrett played by Brittany Inge, work at the firm as well but they’re happy there. Other character fall in line like David Wright played by RJ Walker, who is their pastor friend, and Ari, played by Leland Martin, who is their bisexual friend and he’s comfortable with that and so are his friends. Tia, played by Instastar LaLa Milan, is a stripper but she quit so Simone can help build her image and her brand through Instagram.

The show is about typical millennials tryna make a way and live their life doing what they want. Simone wants a name for herself but without using her parents name. Bryson is tryna get his money but without getting distracted by Simone, since he’s crushing on her. Crystal is trying to get back in her groove since she and David divorced, they were married right after college. Then there’s Ari, living his best life. He hasn’t been on the last two episodes but he’ll be back the week of March 5. Tia is the realest and she’ll tell what it is and what she doesn’t like, especially Simone when it comes to her image.

The show definitely has good music, from Summer Walker’s “Girls Need Love,” to Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love”, to Travis Porter’s “Make it Rain,” to Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down,” to plenty more.

Other activities and normal things that millennials do that the show address is:

Playing spades: asking how each player plays. “Do y’all play Big Joker or Deuces?”
Going to the strip club: millennial woman actually go to the strip clubs and not because we are gay or bisexual. We just enjoy the entertainment and even the chicken wings they serve lol. (No lie).
Not knowing what to do after college. Crystal married David right after college and she said “I didn’t know what I wanted to be so I decided to be someone’s wife.” Yikes!! First of all, I can relate but at the same time, marrying a guy because you didn’t know what career you wanted to pursue is ridiculous. BUT, us millennials are all about taking a risk, doing what’s best for us at the moment and figuring out the rest later.
Prepping for FaceTime calls: nowadays when you’re feeling someone and they FaceTime you, you gotta make sure your hair right, skin right, flexin ya chest, etc.

Bryson said: “Black millennials want it all. We have to be present for everything, because being young, black and gifted is cool but it’s exhausting.” To me, that means millennials want to have everything but in order for them/us to do so we have to be everywhere meeting people, networking etc. which can be very exhausting but that’s what keeps us on our toes, knowledgeable and gifted.

Kehlani While We Wait Review

Kehlani blessed us with some music over the weekend “while we wait” for her to give us a full album after she gives birth to her baby girl.

To me, this “mixtape,” as she calls it, gave me more of a 90s R&B vibe, as clichè as it sounds. This project reminded me of her SweetSexySavage album, which was my first introduction to her. She talks about love, relationships (good and bad), and A LOT of relatable situations on this While We Wait project.

Kehlani started off the mixtape with a feature from Musiq Soulchild titled “Footsteps.” She explains that when she walks away from a relationship when she’s mad, she expects her significant other follow her, leaving footsteps for him to do so.

“Too Deep,” is a relating song to both men and women. It’s about having a side thang and things are getting too serious, “too deep” between the two of you. Y’all arguing when y’all shouldn’t be because it’s just a sex relationship. It’s becoming too much to keep the “relationship” going.

“Nunya” is exactly what it sounds like lol, none of your business. It’s about a guy who she used to be involved with and he wants to know what’s going with her because he lost her and he still cares. Welp, WE’VE ALL BEEN IN THAT SITUATION, men and women, on both ends. He/she lost you and they know it and they still tryna keep up with you to see who you’re involved with now.

Another relating track is “Morning Glory” which is; if a guy accepts you at your best when he goes home with you at night then he needs to accept how you look in the morning, at my morning glory. It’s like a one night stand song lol.

The fifth song “Feels” is about a person who you diggin and they got you feeling them, giving you feels and making you all sensitive inside.

“Nights Like This” is about thinking about your ex on random days, wanting to text them, etc. Then you think about all the good that can come from hitting them up. THEN you think of all the lies they told you and how they’ll get your hopes up again, like they always do. RE-LATE-ABLE. You already know the BS that this person is on but you miss the good moments, then you start getting involved with the person again and they let you down again. 🗣🗣 SPEAK THAT KEHLANI!!!

On the sixth track “RPG” featuring 6lack, which is really “Show Me Your Love” is about having your partner show you that they love you and care. You may complain about them not touching you enough but they correct it, you tell them that they don’t compliment you enough and they correct it, and etc. This song is about communication to me, about talking and listening to your partner and correcting your actions.

The next song “Butterfly,” I’m still unclear on. It’s a beautiful song but I can’t really decipher it, maybe YOU can and comment your thoughts below lol 😬.

The last track “Love Language,” is about knowing what your partner likes as far as how they like to be shown that they are loved. Kehlani says she “wants to be fluent in your love language.” That’s beautiful, it’s like she wants to know what you like and execute it! Some people like gifts to show that they are loved. Some like that their partner listens to them and surprises them with non-materialistic items. Some people don’t care what their partner likes but more so what they are good as when it comes showing their love for that person (selfish 🙄🙄).

Any who, I liked this “mixtape;” I like the different positions she spoke from, like being the cheater in a relationship but also being the one catching feelings, to even being the one who has moved on from a relationship.

August Alsina Forever And a Day EP Review

It’s been a while since August Alsina blessed us with a collection of music and might I say, I was ver excited when he dropped it.

It’s no secret that he was battling a lot, from collapsing at a concert and dealing with health issues, to becoming addicted to prescription drugs to recently losing his sister in law to cancer and having to take care of his three nieces. August has been through a lot, from the broken relationship with his mother to losing his brother to gun violence. He channels his pain through his music and blesses us with it.

His newest EP “Forever and A Day” talks about love, pleasing a woman, and just being there for her. The sound is sensual and sexy. He does a lot of background vocals which is unique AND he threw a couple features on there.

To break down each song; The Ep titled intro “Forever and A Day” song is about loving a woman (or a man, for the women) for forever and wanting to keep that same love for forever.

The second track “Be Love” expresses the want of being there for a woman (or whomever) and wanting to give her the love she deserves. AIN’T THAT SWEET!! 🥰🥰

The song “You” featuring Keith Sweat, is one of my favorites, especially the background vocals. This song is a love making song, and he says it in the song lol. He has Keith Sweat in the chorus and August ironically adds the line “Who can fuck you like me? (Nobody) And who can give you what you need? (Nobody, baby)”

“Control” is self explanatory; it’s about not being able to control yourself around someone you’re involved with. August got Ty Dolla $ign on this one to help with the chorus, another enjoyable hit.

The fifth track “Secret” is about someone bringing out your sensitive side and you don’t want them telling anyone because it’s not part of your normal character. But he also says it’s not that big of a secret because it’s hard for him to hide that fact he’s in love with this girl.

“Go” is so sweet to me; it’s about not wanting to see your girl leave and telling her that y’all can do whatever she wants to do, as long as she stays. The translation is “Just say go and we’ll go.”

The song “Lost,” is about getting lost….in sex. Just getting lost in the moment that’s filled with kisses and hitting spot 👀 👀 okay August!

August closed out the EP with the last track titled “Us,” which is about you and your significant other only having each other, “All We Got Is Us.” Everyone has heard of that saying before, whether it’s in a relationship, friendship, or just yourself on some ‘Me, Myself, and I’ type ish.

I will say that the songs were short and were literally between 2-3 minutes. There weren’t any bridges in the songs, just verse one, pre-chorus, chorus, verse 2, pre-chorus, chorus, then the song ends. Short and sweet to say the least.

I enjoyed the EP, because it was nice hearing a collection of work by him. He last came out with a joint project with Cassius Jay in 2017, but before then, his last actual album was “This Thing Called Life,” which I REALLY enjoyed, came out in 2015. I hope to hear more of his music and an actual album because he is talented, FINE, and he has a lot to speak about.
