Fresh Prince Reunion: Memory-Filled and Tear-Jerker

It’s been 30 years since the The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air aired on television and it is still a fan favorite to this day. The cast (old and new) decided to have a sit down on the replica set to reminisce on their time on the show.

Karyn Parsons who played Hilary Banks, spoke out about Will reciting her lines back to her on the pilot show. Then they took a dive back to other episodes when Will mouthed the lines of his co-stars as they were citing them LIVE, such as an episode when Don Cheadle appeared in the first season. That showed Will’s work ethic; he knew everyone’s lines and that’s just perfection!

Who could forget the moments that Jazzy Jeff was thrown out of the mansion countless times–over 150 takes, as he stated. Thankfully the producers decided to use old takes so Jazz wouldn’t have to torture anymore. (lol)

The tear-jerker moment came when they showed a montage of James Avery moments. The whole cast was visibly emotional while watching it, especially Will when talking about the father-son episode/ moment between him and James. He stated that James influenced his acting and helped shaped him. The rest of the cast had nothing but great things to say about James Avery; Tatyana Ali said that he hipped her to Jazz music and the history behind.

A trivial moment was when Will sat down Janet Hubert, A.K.A. Dark-Skin Aunt Viv. It was the first time they seen each other in 27 years and possibly since her departure from the show. He opened up about how he felt about her at the time of the show and him being unaware of what she was going through while being on set and pregnant. She added that she was in an abusive marriage at the time so all of that plus the network recasting her role because she didn’t accept their offer was a lot on Janet Hubert. The two buried the hatchet and Janet even made an appearance on the set to see her old castmates and even meet the other aunt Viv, Daphne Maxwell Reid for the first time.

Everything was a full circle, coming to Jesus moment because Will had said some not-so-nice things about Janet in the past and she did the same plus spoke out about the other cast members. It was great to see the family back together, looking great and most importantly embracing each other with love.

[DELUX MAG] Power Couple Empowering the Community

Check out my interview on DELUXMag.com about St. Louis’s Power couple empowering the community and many more!

power

It’s one thing to be a couple making business moves together, but it’s another thing to be a couple and giving back to the community. Onnie Bella and LaRonn (The Tycoon) are legit goals, yet they are modest when they hear the compliment. From throwing parties for “young professionals” to living out their passion and goals of giving back to the community.

DELUX was granted the opportunity to interview this busy couple and get to know them better.

DELUXHey you two. Thanks for talking with me and congratulations on your engagement.

Onnie & LaRonn: Thank you so much! We are literally still trying to make time to soak it up. It’s still fresh and new, but we’re super busy and find new projects or community events to start planning almost weekly [laughs].

DELUX: So, let’s get started. How did you all meet?

O&L: So, it’s crazy because I ended up at a party he was throwing, I came with my friends, kicked it, and left. About a month later I get a message from him thanking me for coming out to the event and asking for my feedback on the event. I gave my feedback, which I think was super helpful and constructive [laughs], and from there he asked if I would ever come back, and I think I said something like “If you invite me and I’m free, I’ll come.” I literally meant like free as in have nothing to do, and he thought I meant like didn’t have to pay [laughs], and instantly sent his number like “I can make that happen.” A week later we were texting and the rest is history.

DELUXDo you all have power couple inspirations? Like Beyoncé and Jay-Z of course do music together and Jada & Will own a production company together.

O&L: We don’t have a power couple inspiration. We aren’t all that into idolizing stars or other people at all for that matter. If you focus on what you have without trying to compare it or make it like someone else’s journey, your free to make mistakes, learn from them, and not feel pressured to fit into a box of “how it’s supposed to be.” We’ve made our relationship our own and it just so happens we are a power couple. We do get a lot of “#goals” comments and things of that nature.

Of course, we appreciate it and we’re flattered and that’s a dope hashtag for someone to associate with us, but our hope is honestly that associating us with “#goals” means more than just that. We hope we can remind folks that love still exists, building something concrete still exists, and that it doesn’t have to look like a cookie cutter version of what you see on tv.

power

DELUXWhat made you so comfortable with starting a business together? Some couples wait until they’re married sometimes.

O&L: I think the fact we both had done events in some type of capacity made us feel confident about hosting events together. We also have a great balance as business partners. We both bring different things to the table when it comes to our strengths and weaknesses and we complement each other, so it makes for a great team. We didn’t even hesitate over the fact we weren’t married when we thought of going into this together. We both believed in the brand and each other, so we ran with it.

DELUXThat’s so inspiring!! You two make a great team. How did you come up with the name SAUCE for your brand?

Happy Birthday to The King of Pop, Michael Jackson

Today is Michael Jackson’s 60th birthday. He was such an influence on many generations, starting from the 1960’s until now, CURRENTLY in music.

He was nominated for 38 Grammys and actually won 13 from 1979 up until 2010, after  his death in 2009.

Michael released 10 studio and even had a role in The Wiz as the Scarecrow, one of the main character (DUH) just in case you didn’t know.

His songs have been sampled by artists like SWV (“Human Nature Remix”), Chris Brown (“She Ain’t You”), LL Cool J (“Hey Lover”), and many more! Just recently, Drake used Michael Jackson’s vocals on his song “Don’t Matter To Me.” The vocals came from an unreleased song from MJ.

Michael’s music is still relevant today as well as his dance moves. He’s influenced artists such as Chris Brown, Beyonce, NeYo, NSYNC, Kanye, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Jay-Z and of course many.

May he continue to Rest In Peace and let his legacy live on!

Are We Tired of Reality Show Fights?

So reality shows are my weakness, my guilty pleasure. Shows like Love and Hip Hop, Basketball Wives, Black Ink Crew, Growing up Hip Hop, Real Housewives of Atlanta, ALL THAT!

BUT I’m getting tired of all the fights. It was entertaining at first but now it’s so common that it seems staged. For instance:

Love & Hip Hop Hollywood has thee MOST fights. Recently, Lyrica and A1’s mothers got into a fight over some adultery possibly for Lyrica supposedly flirting or wanting to have sex with Safaree. So the two older women threw shit at each other and just causing an unnecessary scene. Then A1 and Safaree had argument about the situation…with a damn Honda Accord in between them..STAGED!

Saf & A1

Then there’s Black Ink Crew, specifically Chicago since that’s the one that’s being aired right now. The crew is separated by 9 Mag and Loyal Ink. Tattoo artist Lily is with Loyal Ink and her ex Junior is with the owner, under 9 Mag. The whole crew went down to Jamaica, supposedly not knowing that the other squad was going to be there and there was a fight. The girl Lily ran up on Junior’s girlfriend Adriana, because Junior who was drunk and kinda disrespecting the Loyal Ink name (so she got the next best thing). Then a new tattoo artist names Reese decided to run with Lily to fight Junior and/or his girlfriend (It’s still unclear.) The girl Reese said that Junior hit her in the face and then that was an issue, next thing you know, Junior is fighting producers and even accidentally hit Ryan in the face. By the end of it all, Junior and his girlfriend were sent home. What could have avoided this is, Lily being the fire cracker that she is, shouldn’t have pursued Junior or paid him any mind. Junior shouldn’t have gotten too drunk and honestly, if he was left alone then the fight would have never happened. I HATE how these reality shows take they ass to a different country or vacay in another city and they decide to fight. But the real question is: who’s in charge of this shit? Are the producers provoking the cast to fight? Are they bribing the cast by telling them if they fight, they get more money.

Lastly, Teen Mom 2. Fighting on reunion shows! Teen Mom Briana started dating her co-worker/fellow Teen Mom Kailyn (Kail) ex-husband Javi. That’s messy by itself. So there were words and shade exchanged before the reunion. Kail was talking her shit, as she should because her “coworker” is dating her ex-husband. Then it gets messy when Javi and Briana breaks up and he slightly talks about it Kail’s podcast. Briana decides to go on a Twitter rant and say some disrespectful things about Kail and her one of her son’s father. Kail being the savage that she is, decides that she wants to have a face-to-face conversation with Briana at the reunion before they actually go on stage. The conversation was brief because Briana really wasn’t trying to address or admit to what she said. Conversation ended, then it’s time to go on stage and all of a sudden Briana gets some balls and decides to come at Kail, yelling and screaming. It, again, seemed staged because she had the opportunity to talk to Kail behind closed doors BUT she wanted to put on a show in front of an audience. In this case, I believe that Briana wanted to prove a point that she wasn’t a punk, OR she coulda just wanted to put on a show for the crowd OR lastly she coulda just snapped. Her sister Brittany who appears on the show, even told her she shouldn’t have gon wild like that because it’s making her look like the aggressor.

Okay, I understand reality TV has transpired into non-reality and more staged and scripted but damn can they do less scripted fighting? Reality TV has given off the perception that it’s all about fighting and it doesn’t help that a lot of them are Black women. YES, I know there are shows like RHO New Jersey, and The Real World that have white women fighting as well. Overall, Black, White, Asian, Mexican, Saudi Arabian, whoever needs to stop the stereotypical fighting on TV. Yes it gets the show ratings, yes it’s entertaining, yes it may get the show renewed for another season and that’s more money BUT is that what they’re values are based upon? More picking fights = more money? I meannnnn unless they’re getting paid $1 millon per episode per fight then DO YOU BOO; But if that’s not the case, then they need to reevaluate some things.

Honestly, I think everyone as a whole need to cut their scripted reality TV intake, including myself.

Make sure you check out my YouTube Channel, Episode 5 part 1 of me discussing these fights and how overrated they are.

The BlacKkKlansmen Movie Review

Credit: reelrundown.com

Over the weekend  I seen this movie and did NOT know that it was based on a true story. I really thought it was just another great movie that  Jordan Peele wrote and Spike Lee so happenedly directed BUT that was partially the case. The man character Ron Stallsworth, is played by John David Washington, which is Denzel Washington’s SON. Ron is a rookie at the Colorado Springs police department and is placed on special assignment when he persuaded the chief that the KKK needed to be investigated. He infiltrated the Klan by calling them (got the number from local newspaper, stupid right?) Since there wasn’t caller ID back then, Ron didn’t have to call private. He literally put on his “white voice” and got in.

Ron used his “white voice” over the phone and had his white coworker actually go meet up with the klan and eventually join. There’s always one skeptical person and that was one of the Klansmen. He tried to intimidate the “white Ron Stallsworth” but it didn’t work.

The real Ron Stallsworth befriended a woman by the name of Patrice, from the Black Student Union at a local college and she was pro Black and down with the Black Power Movement. The police department tried to compare her and the  student union to the “dangerous” Black Panther Movement but they weren’t like that BUT even if they were, they would be fighting or equality and respect.

Any who, the Klan was working on an attack towards the black student union, specifically Patrice because she was very vocal on the racism she faced, specifically from the Colorado Police Department, an officer that Ron was familiar with.

Ron had spoken to the David Duke over the phone on multiple occasions. David Duke was the head of the Klan at the time and so happened to be a politician. He was granted the opportunity to meet him in person, as himself, as his security for the initiation of the white version of him being inducted into the Klu Klux Klan. Along with the initiation going on, that same day was the day that the KKK had planned to attack Patrice and the Student Union. Ron stopped the attacked and it ended up back firing on the people involved because they were the ones who ended up dying.

While investigating the KKK, There weren’t any cross burnings happening in that chapter, nor any hangings or other causes of death. Ron also helped the FBI identify missing weapons (that were used in the attempted attack) that were stolen by military members who were actually in the KKK as well. They were arrested.

What was educational about the movie?

  • The fact that it was a true story and the fact that you wouldn’t be able to do this now as easy due to technology.
  • The fact that they really thought that black people only talked a certain way. The klan said that black people say things like “shucking and jiving” AND EVEN MORE FUNNY, instead of saying “Are you going to the store to get some chicken” we say “Ar-uh”, like we really can’t say the word “are”. So judgmental, but are we surprised…nah.

Why was this funny?

  • This was funny because the Klan and any other racist people don’t give Black People enough credit for being just as smart and even smarter than them.
  • The Klan got GOT. Now’s who’s the dumb one.
  • Also, the fact the David Duke didn’t know he was talking to a black man over the phone and he was sooooo comfortable with the real Ron. Btw, David Duke was played by Topher Grace, who played Eric Forman on That 70’s Show.

Why was the infiltration successful?

  • Ron saved lives
  • Ron prevented SOME cross burnings
  • He got a lot of intel

Why was the movie successful?

Well, it brought in  $10.8 Million opening weekend!

I  really enjoyed this movie. It was informative, entertaining, kind of angering because of the language used, but overall it was a good movie.

What did you all think of the movie?
