Netflix’s “Hollywood” Addresses Racial and Sexuality Barriers in the 1940s

Netflix released a series this week called “Hollywood” and the title says everything of what it is about PLUS MORE. It takes place in the late 1940s and a few individuals are trying to get their big break in Hollywood; one guy being a white aspiring actor[Jack Castello, played by David Corenswet], a black gay screenwriter[Archie Coleman, played by Jeremy Pope], a black aspiring actress [Camille Washington, Laura Harrier] who wants more than maid roles, and a white aspiring gay actor [Rock Hudson, played by Jake Picking] who just wants a break. Of course during the 40s, being black and/or gay was very controversial and not accepted.

Archie Coleman wrote a film titled Peg but once the executives found out he was black, they wanted to pay him off and write someone else’s name on the film. He wasn’t going for that. Archie fought and with the help director Raymond Ainsley, played by Darren Criss, and some “not-so-bad” executives, he was able to still be part of the process and continue to have his name on the film. Raymond’s girlfriend Camille [yes, an interracial couple] wanted to audition for the film even though the script is meant for an all-white cast. Archie and Raymond decided that if Camille was cast as the main character, then they would change the title to Meg. Luckily, she was cast as Meg!! It sparked controversy and even harassment but she overcame it, even Archie.

Camille even received support from Hattie McDaniels,  played by Queen Latifah. She warned her that she would face backlash, but nonetheless, she was proud of her. Hattie even congratulated Camille on her Oscar win backstage. At the time when Hattie won her Oscar years prior, she was unable to be in the main venue even though she was nominated. It was very monumental when she greeted Camille backstage.

At the end of the movie while the cast of Meg is at the 20th annual Oscars, as the nominees and winners are being announced, you can tell the writers of the series wanted to focus on the minorities. When the white people of the cast of Meg won awards, they skipped their actual emotion and acceptance versus for the others. For instance, when Chinese actress Annie Mae Wong, played by Michelle Kruseic, won for best supporting actress, she was snubbed years back for a role in a different movie, so when she won this time, the writers of this series made sure to capture her emotions and presence on the stage. When Archie won for best writer, he not only kissed his boyfriend Rock in front of everyone, but once he got on stage to accept his award, he was unapologetic about it while being booed!! When Raymond won for best director, the camera captured him in the lobby with the award and the celebrating with the cast of the movie, not on stage. Lastly, when Camille won, everything from her heartbeat was being heard, to the long pause she took before speaking.

I loved how the producers captured what was not accepted and even possible in the 1940s. Some characters are real and others are fake but, they made the series seem more pleasant and acceptable and even not pitting the Camille and the white supporting actress against each other.

Did you all capture the series? If so, what are your thoughts?

Are We Tired of Reality Show Fights?

So reality shows are my weakness, my guilty pleasure. Shows like Love and Hip Hop, Basketball Wives, Black Ink Crew, Growing up Hip Hop, Real Housewives of Atlanta, ALL THAT!

BUT I’m getting tired of all the fights. It was entertaining at first but now it’s so common that it seems staged. For instance:

Love & Hip Hop Hollywood has thee MOST fights. Recently, Lyrica and A1’s mothers got into a fight over some adultery possibly for Lyrica supposedly flirting or wanting to have sex with Safaree. So the two older women threw shit at each other and just causing an unnecessary scene. Then A1 and Safaree had argument about the situation…with a damn Honda Accord in between them..STAGED!

Saf & A1

Then there’s Black Ink Crew, specifically Chicago since that’s the one that’s being aired right now. The crew is separated by 9 Mag and Loyal Ink. Tattoo artist Lily is with Loyal Ink and her ex Junior is with the owner, under 9 Mag. The whole crew went down to Jamaica, supposedly not knowing that the other squad was going to be there and there was a fight. The girl Lily ran up on Junior’s girlfriend Adriana, because Junior who was drunk and kinda disrespecting the Loyal Ink name (so she got the next best thing). Then a new tattoo artist names Reese decided to run with Lily to fight Junior and/or his girlfriend (It’s still unclear.) The girl Reese said that Junior hit her in the face and then that was an issue, next thing you know, Junior is fighting producers and even accidentally hit Ryan in the face. By the end of it all, Junior and his girlfriend were sent home. What could have avoided this is, Lily being the fire cracker that she is, shouldn’t have pursued Junior or paid him any mind. Junior shouldn’t have gotten too drunk and honestly, if he was left alone then the fight would have never happened. I HATE how these reality shows take they ass to a different country or vacay in another city and they decide to fight. But the real question is: who’s in charge of this shit? Are the producers provoking the cast to fight? Are they bribing the cast by telling them if they fight, they get more money.

Lastly, Teen Mom 2. Fighting on reunion shows! Teen Mom Briana started dating her co-worker/fellow Teen Mom Kailyn (Kail) ex-husband Javi. That’s messy by itself. So there were words and shade exchanged before the reunion. Kail was talking her shit, as she should because her “coworker” is dating her ex-husband. Then it gets messy when Javi and Briana breaks up and he slightly talks about it Kail’s podcast. Briana decides to go on a Twitter rant and say some disrespectful things about Kail and her one of her son’s father. Kail being the savage that she is, decides that she wants to have a face-to-face conversation with Briana at the reunion before they actually go on stage. The conversation was brief because Briana really wasn’t trying to address or admit to what she said. Conversation ended, then it’s time to go on stage and all of a sudden Briana gets some balls and decides to come at Kail, yelling and screaming. It, again, seemed staged because she had the opportunity to talk to Kail behind closed doors BUT she wanted to put on a show in front of an audience. In this case, I believe that Briana wanted to prove a point that she wasn’t a punk, OR she coulda just wanted to put on a show for the crowd OR lastly she coulda just snapped. Her sister Brittany who appears on the show, even told her she shouldn’t have gon wild like that because it’s making her look like the aggressor.

Okay, I understand reality TV has transpired into non-reality and more staged and scripted but damn can they do less scripted fighting? Reality TV has given off the perception that it’s all about fighting and it doesn’t help that a lot of them are Black women. YES, I know there are shows like RHO New Jersey, and The Real World that have white women fighting as well. Overall, Black, White, Asian, Mexican, Saudi Arabian, whoever needs to stop the stereotypical fighting on TV. Yes it gets the show ratings, yes it’s entertaining, yes it may get the show renewed for another season and that’s more money BUT is that what they’re values are based upon? More picking fights = more money? I meannnnn unless they’re getting paid $1 millon per episode per fight then DO YOU BOO; But if that’s not the case, then they need to reevaluate some things.

Honestly, I think everyone as a whole need to cut their scripted reality TV intake, including myself.

Make sure you check out my YouTube Channel, Episode 5 part 1 of me discussing these fights and how overrated they are.

Back to L.A: Birthday Trip

So my birthday was Sunday (August 5th) and it was GREAT!! I went back to LA. If you can remember, last April I made a post about going to Cali –>   I’m Going Back to Cali!

I switched up my itinerary this time and kind of went with the flow of things. I can honestly say this trip was better! So let me tell you how it started:

Friday:

Flight was at 5:50am Friday morning…BUT IT WAS CANCELED. WTF RIGHT! It literally was canceled 2 hours before take off so I had to change my flight. Luckily I did it  just in time because I was one of the last people to board the plane.

I had a layover in Las Vegas, which was cool because I had never been there  and I was able to play the slot machines in the airport. BUT  my flight there was delayed by almost an hour BUT I still kept a positive attitude because it was my birthday weekend.

I FINALLY  got to LA and met up with my friends and what was the first thing we did? SHOTS!!! (Of Fireball of course) then VENICE BEACH!!

Of course we had to experience the nightlife, sooooo we stepped out and I HAD to show out! 38C5A59A-C2AB-44D1-BFB4-CA941D7A26A2BE523F23-2370-49EC-904C-27691EA7B725

Saturday:

Next day, we decided to go to The actual Fashion Nova store at the Burbank mall. Not impressed at all.  Of course there are a few of the actual stores in LA but the one we went to looked very cheap, needless to say. I did find a cute dress there tho 🤷🏽‍♀️

We walked around  a bit in Hollywood,  saw the Hollywood star of fame. We even seen Trump’s star or lack there of since it’s been destroyed.

We got a good recommendation from our Uber for a place to eat called Beauty & Essex. Talk about GOOD FOOD!!

The plan that night was to go out again but uhhhhhh, we tapped  out and was K-O. Embarrassing right lol?

BUT we made up for it the next day lol.

Sunday:

The day of my BIRTHDAY!!

We started off the day hiking at Griffith Park and it was amazing!! VERY high up but we could see the beautiful city!

Then off to Santa Monica beach, which wasn’t too impressive. Too many people and dirty water 😟👎🏾 But we still enjoyed the sand and light sun.

Last but not least, I had to be a little extra for my birthday for the last night and uhhh…. yeah..

⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

Overall, I loved this trip this time around. All my peoples vibed with each other, and we already talking about a trip next year!

Where have y’all traveled to this year so far?
