Which Artists had the best year?

2017 was a good year for some artists, from high record sales, to mega revenue coming through on their end. I can only image the their net worth by the end of this year. As I said in my blog post [Album Releases of 2017 ]  this was a great year for music. It’s been so great, that a few of these artist probably had the year out of them all, musically. Check out these artist below.

Migos; as a whole the trio has been winning, starting from the beginning of the year when in January, Donald Glover gave them a shout out at the Golden Globes award show,  for their song “Bad & Boujee” the recognition, Bad and Boujee rose up on the charts and became number 1 on the Billboard awards. Migos as a group have released four singles and currently 1 “Motorsport” is in the top 10 on the billboards. Quavo was the most successful member outside of the group, featuring in four songs including “Congratulations” by Post Malone, “You the One” by Dj Khaled, “Good Drank” by 2 Chainz and “Strip That” by Liam Payne and many more. They even got more attention for their live interview with Joe Budden and the Everyday Struggle cast, that went terribly wrong.

Cardi B; she went from the strip club, to Love and HipHop for two season, to her first big single number 1 on the top 100 chart. More recently, she was recognized for having three hit songs on the billboard chart at one time with her single; “Bodak Yellow”,” No Limit”, and “Motorsport.” Bodak Yellow sold 3 million units, making the single certified 3x Platinum, per the RIAA standards. She also graced mazaginr covers such as Fader and New York Mag AND she even got proposed to by Offset from Migos. Talk about a lit year!

Next, there’s my girl SZA, (whom I saw in concert on December 19, and it was awesome). She’s been out since 2014 and featured on Wale’s album The Album About Nothing, singing the chorus on “The Need To Know.” She was also on featured on Rihanna’s album Anti, singing on “Consideration.” She’s released three EP’s but Her first album titled CTRL is what got her her mega fan base.  Her first single “Love Galore”, received her a platinum plague, selling one million units, per RIAA. Her song “The Weekend” wasn’t even released as a single it received a platinum plague. She also received FIVE Grammy nominations for the 2018 awards. WOOT WOOT, GO SZA!

Switching focus to Rihanna and her selling her Fenty Beauty make up line. She earned $72 million in sales in just ONE MONTH of selling the product. Rihanna debuted the make up in September, starting out with 40 shades and 9 highlighters and other makeup products; she also has a partnership with Puma.

Lastly, I’m gonna add Chris Brown to this list. He put on a 45 track album, Heartbreak On A Full Moon, and it sold over 64,000 units in a week. (Check out my blog post about Chris Brown Album Review)–   But he is the first artist to successfully release an album that long and be very success with it. ALL of his albums have been in the top 10 on the charts; and two were number 1.

Personally, I didn’t listen to the whole list but 70% I did and my favorites were  Pressure, Culture, I Decided,  More Life, 2Chainz, Gotti, Remy & Fat Joe and even catch a snippet of Vic’s album, which wasn’t bad.

Now, the R&B albums this year were so LIT! I was more in tune with these albums than anything else. I actually did listen to all of them, minus Keyshia Cole’s 11:11 Reset

(I haven’t had a chance to listen to her, but I’ve always loved her and Imma give her her credit)

For me, it’s been a great year to listen to music and I’m excited to see what’s coming next year. I heard Cardi B should be coming with an album, Nicki Minaj, I wouldn’t be surprised if Drake came out with something.

Check out my next post on the artists that you may have slept on this year who may start shining bright next year!

If I missed anyone, call me out on it but more than likely if I didn’t list them then I don’t listen to their music orrrr I haven’t listened to it yet.

War & Leisure: Album Review

R&B, Neo-soul artist Miguel dropped his fourth album titled War & Leisure on Friday. I’ve been listening to it nonstop sense then. The album features Rick Ross, Travis Scott, Quiñ, Kali Uchis, and the talented J.Cole whom he has other singles with like “Power Trip” and “All I Want Is You”.

This album is so….Miguel. From the instrumentals to the ad-libs to his recognizable voice. He’s got sexy songs, inspiration songs, fessing up songs and even a full blown Spanish song on the album. We all have been waiting since his last album was released in 2015. He’s been teasing us with covers on social media and he’s FINALLY released an album.

As I said before, you can definitely  here the instrumentals on this album, specifically the guitar. You can tell that Prince is/was a big part of his inspiration. Also, over time, Miguel’s image was slowly changed and that comes with growth; but with that growth, music never dies. He may go MIA for a while but when he comes from hiding, it’s like he never left.

If you like different melodies, with guitar instrumentals, feeling different vibes, then I encourage you to listen to this exotic album. My only critic is, I would have loved for it to be longer, like three more songs would have been good.

I give it 5 stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

The Face Behind CS Productions

One of my good friends, Charles Staten Jr., from college had the opportunity to be featured in a DreamWorks Animations article. He’s been “From Trouble to Corporate Deals” as the article titles it; by getting his big break from recording a couples wedding dance a year ago in Dallas, TX, whom which are alumni of my school, Missouri State University. He posted the video and within hours he had over one million views and from there it’s been nothing but success. He has since started his own production company “CS Productions” and has been granted other deals and opportunities. I’m glad to say that I know this funny, talented guy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SZA!!

Happy 27th birthday to one of my FAVORITE artists. She became well-know so fast with her free spirit and say it how it is mentality.
She has made women like me realize that, you may not have the total package for one guy, i.e. his “supermodel”, but another guy will appreciate your flaws and all.
Also, it’s okay NOT to be a “normal girl”; AND you may be talking to a guy who’s talking to multiple women BUT don’t be an in denial woman, deal with him when you wanna deal with him (the weekend).
Happy birthday beautiful queen!

Another Great Album: Heartbreak On a Full Moon

After listening to this album for 6 days now, I realized that maybe I should do a review on it. CHRIS BROWN CAN DO NO WRONG, MUSICALLY!   You can say whatever you want about him but one thing you can’t say is he isn’t talented. This man is talented beyond means, from acting, to singing, rapping, dancing AND fashion designer.

Even though the media has caught some of his bad moments, he’s had more good than bad; for instance, from the time he stepped on the music scene in 2005, he’s been nominated for over 200 awards and won 89 awards, including 1 Grammy for his F.A.M.E. album, which happened AFTER the Rihanna incident, that seems to never die down.

Chris has had 87 songs charted on the Billboards, 13 of those were top 10 hits and 2 of them were number 1 hit. He has released EIGHT albums in his 12-year career. Let’s just give this man credit because it’s definitely due.

Now, let’s talk about this album…GREATNESS!! I can’t think of an artist who produced 45 songs on ONE album! He sampled Roger, an 80’s artist in his song “Juicy Booty.” His two songs “Questions” and “Hope You Do” are interpolations of Kevin Little’s “Turn Me On” and Donnell Jones “Where I Wanna Be.” Other interpolates are “To My Bed” referencing to “Nice & Slow” by Usher, and “Even” which is a sample of Michael’s Jackson “Remember The Time.” This Album has some familiarity within that’ll make you want to keep listening. It has some top 100 hits for the variety radio stations and of course your normal R&B tunes from Chris.

So, before you criticize him for all his wrongdoing, look at his accomplishments. I’m not saying let his accomplishments make you forget about all the wrong he’s done BUT there are more pros than cons to him music and personal life.

ALBUM RATING: solid 5 ✨✨✨✨✨

“This Is Us”: Addressing Racism

Did you catch last night episode of This Is Us??? If you didn’t….YOU SHOULD!!!! If you don’t watch the show…again YOU SHOULD!!!!The format is contrastive to any other show you may watch. It has a bit of diversity in it and the characters aren’t cliché–especially Randall’s, one of the main characters” wife. She is one of my favorites.

(Background info): The mother of the three children, Rebecca, was pregnant with triplets but one of them didn’t survive. On that same day she gave birth, Randall was born that same day and Rebecca adopted him; replacing the spot of the original triplet. Randall is also black and the family is white

(Spoiler Alert) Last night on the fourth episode of This Is Us, it shun a light on racism. As the episode took a step back into time when the main characters were kids, the grandmother to the children treated Randall different than his siblings. To Rebecca’s knowledge, she thought it was because he was adopted but in actuality, it is because he is black. The Grandmother would make rude remarks like “The twins AND Randall” versus saying the triplets, or “Who would have thought that Randall would be the one to attend a private school;” OR even better; When the grandmother visits the family, she always brings Randall a basketball. To the mother, Rebecca’s recollection, Grandma has brought Randall two basketballs before.

So if you aren’t catching what I’m throwing down or smelling what I’m stepping in, let me break it down for you:

  • First off, why does grandma have to single out Randall by adding him as an additional like he’s a dog or other relative; for example: “the kids and Lassie (a dog)” or “the twins and daisy (a cat)”?
  • Secondly, why is it a surprise that he would go to a private school? Is it because he’s black and there is a stereotype that black kids don’t attend private school OR aren’t smart enough for them?
  • Lastly, WHY does she keep buying this kid a basketball? I’ll tell you why..because there is a stereotype that ALL black people, specifically boys/men, are good at basketball. Randall said he didn’t like basketball and that he preferred football, BUT he would try it just for his grandma. Awww that’s sweet.

After Grandma did all that in the span of five minutes, her daughter Rebecca called her out on it. She flat out called her mom a racist! Now mind you, the show takes place in the late 80’s possibly into 90’s, when they go back in time. Racism, compared to the 1960’s had calmed down, so Grandma should have known better, BUT on the flip side, she grew up during a time that black people did not have equal rights.

Any who, after Rebecca called out her mom, she told her that she would have to leave her house, in which she wasn’t invited to on that specific day.  My point with all this is–right is right and wrong is wrong. If you have to call out your own mother about her remarks being racist or closed-minded then DO THAT!! What makes the show even better that it is a white woman calling out another white person about being racist.

With all the injustice and police brutality going on today, there needs to be a white person that speaks up on the issues. If some white people don’t agree with the actions and FACTS coming from black people, and another white person understands more, then the understanding white person should speak up and educate the “not-understanding” white person.

Sometimes it’s easier to listen to someone who shares the same race as you, than someone who doesn’t.
