On this day 27 YEARS AGO, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air aired on TV.  The “Prince” charmed everyone in the show and was even a successful artist outside of the sitcom.

Travel Alone, Its Okay!

“You traveling alone?”

“Are you meeting some man online down there or something??”

“You didn’t take no man with you for that long drive?”

“12 hours is a long time by yourself!”

These are all the comments and questions I got asked when I decided to drive to Dallas & Houston from St. Louis a couple months ago.

MY ANSWER: The show don’t stop for nobody.

Secondly: Why a man gotta go with me to travel outside the state?? 😒😒 sexist AF!

Thirdly : never will I go meet a guy I met online, in another state.

YES, I drove down to Houston by myself. Nobody rode with me and guess what???? I enjoyed it. Sometimes you have to do things solo and get ‘er done without folks. Yes, of course I asked my friends but they had other plans or couldn’t afford or couldn’t get the time off work or they probably  didn’t wanna go with me 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don’t have a twin, I came in this world solo so guess what?? I gotta do shit solo. This was, in a sense, a spiritual journey.

Now…there are some stipulations to traveling alone. Yes you can go by yourself but make sure:

•wherever you’re going, you know someone in that city/town.

•Also get you some rest.

•Gas up during the day

•Get a bunch of snacks..(if you love to eat like me)

•Have some kind of weapon in your car..it doesn’t have to be a gun. Something as simple as a bat, knife, or even a taser would do.

In my case, I was lucky. I drove to Springfield, Mo (my Alma Mater, GO BEARS), stayed with my little cousin for the night and then drove from there to Dallas the next morning, where I have a cousin who stays in Garland, Texas. I bonded with her then the next morning I was on to the next city: Houston. There, I have a slew of family so there was never a dull moment.

So my point is this: if you wanna travel to a city where you know people at, but you don’t have anyone to go with you…just go alone. People be all talk and no action, so why wait on them? I can honestly say I learned my lesson BUT…there I did take trip the last weekend of July to MIAMIIII with some lovely ladies. We had fun!!

That’s another traveling tip I want to give out: travel with dependable people and know what you’re travelers are willing to spend when you all go out. Not saying you gotta be balling but know what you wanna do before you go on that vacay, that way you’ll know how much money to bring.

At the end of the year, I’ll do a year review of where all I’ve traveled to this year.

Long story short: Travel alone, even if it’s alone, and make sure you plan accordingly.

Black Women That Rock 2017

So I caught the Black Girls Rock special last night and I was so proud! Seeing women that look like me achieve a rare accomplishment, especially from where we started. Their motto is “Celebrating beauty, brilliant and resilience of black women around the world.”

My celeb bae, SZA, started the show out singing Normal Girl, which is one of my favorite songs on the CTRL album.

Then one of my favorite actor/actress Taraji P Henson was the host and started off with a few jokes about hair and how she embraces it and is brave about what she does with. She recently just chopped it off and it looks LOVELY on her!

The first award of the night was presented to Yara Shahidi, for the “Young, Black and Gifted.” She is one of the main characters on the show Black-ish, and she recently got a spin-off show called Grown-ish that explores her college life. Coincidentally, she is starting college at Harvard in the Fall of 2018. GO YARA!!!!

She is the first black woman to lead a publicly traded financial institution. KUDOS to Ms. Suzanne!!!!

Lastly, AUNTIE Maxine Waters took the cake with her speech and overall using her platform to be speak up about this “President” of ours.

Here are a few quotes she said last night:

“I am you and you are me. We have power & influence”

“Not only will we resist you but we will impeach you, Mr. President.”

“I don’t care how big you think you are. I care how high you think you are…if you come for me, I’m coming for you!”

YES MA’AM AUNTIE MAXINE!! She says she is reclaiming her time hunny and I aint mad at her!!

ALL of these Black Women Rock!!! Watching these awards gave me a slight boost of confidence and made me realize.. don’t be afraid to be different, being awkward is okay, think for yourself and lastly SPEAK UP!!

You Tried Me…Let That Be the Last Time

He tried you, you let him, let it be the last time.

Has he ever called you unattractive then wanted to be in your face because you look good THAT day?

Did he say he wasn’t looking for a relationship but you find out he’s in one, not even a month later?

Did he say you’re not the one for him but yet he couldn’t leave you alone?

Did he say he was only looking for a friendship but still wanted to fuck?

Did he call you a bad mother and say you don’t do anything for y’all kids…but you keep them 5 days out the week compared to his 2 measly days?

Did he call you fat in front of his friends but slide in your DMs later?

Girl…he tried you, you fell for the okey doke and shook that shit off….let that be the last time you shake it off. These men, boys, niggas, whatever you wanna call em, be trying us and we let them sometimes because we like them (at the time). Maybe we let them because we have low self-esteem and will settle for what we can, naw FUCK THAT! When you have low standards and low expectations, you get a low budget nigga. You can do better…so do better.

Let that be the last time he tries you, Queen.

Thrift Store Findings!

The best way to find old vintage clothes….is the Thrift Store, also known as The Goodwill. You can find a piece of clothing and make it into a cute vintage look or even a current fashion trend.

Below is me and my friend Randyy. She’s rocking a green off the shoulder crop top with a Hawaiian skort. Guess what??? Our bottoms were only $3.50

img_04831.jpg

Next up is SKORTS!!!! Me and Randz (Randyy) are bringing them back. In the pic below, I’m rocking a striped Tommy Hilfiger Shirt ($3.50), and a regular blue jean  skort  ($3.50). Randy has on the same outfit as above and her skort was $3.50.

Next up: I’m rocking a blue jean button up with a khaki Nancy Drew type skirt. Again, it was $3.50. The Goodwill always has set prices on their tops, dresses and bottoms. Skirts  are always $3.50, just an FYI.

Look at my best friend slaying this oversized dress; off her shoulder and making it look soooo classy. Another good buy for only $3.50!!

Another classy, edgy look Randyy is rocking below is a red tribal skirt; another great grab at the Goodwill for $4.50.

LASTLY,  I’m rocking a cute striped skirt. It reminds me of a cute homemaker skirt, like the one the killer nanny had on in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle lol. AND it has pockets! Who doesn’t love a skirt with pockets??

Well that concludes this round of Thrift Store findings. I hope this has motivated you to start saving and start thrifting. You can still go to your local mall but you won’t have to spend as much!!

Toodles!!

Mental Health Awareness

Before this month ends…which is TODAY, I want to bring awareness to Mental health illnesses.  So just in case you didn’t know, a few mental health illnesses are:  anxiety, dementia, a few types of depression, ADHD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), post traumatic stress, schizophrenia,  and bipolar.

As a black woman, I grew up never hearing about these illnesses in my household. It is kind of known in the black community that mental health illnesses aren’t addressed, until it’s too late. It’s one of those things where you’ll hear “oh you just have to pray about it and it’ll be fine,” OR “they need whooping” OR the famous line “that person is just crazy.” Sometimes people aren’t just crazy, they really need to seek help. In my opinion, a case that may be common but often overlooked is being raised by a single parent. A child could have had both parents in their household and then all of a sudden one parent leaves the house, father OR mother, and that could cause the child to be depressed. Then the kid could start becoming irritable and start acting out in school because of they are sad about the parent leaving the house and they don’t know how to cope. Then eventually that behavior expands to something worse and the behavior is more extensive and troubling; when all along, the child was suffering was depression from their parent walking on them. Even if it’s better late than never, past issues should be addressed so you can grow and learn from yourself.

Rwenshaun Miller, founder and executive director of Eustress Inc, was on The Breakfast Club on May 25, with his former doctor, Dr. Kendall Jasper, talking about his experience with a mental illness. He was hearing voices in his head and eventually switched to drinking instead of taking his medication and eventually was hospitalized. He says that being bipolar can be hereditary (biological)  or environmental (stress); and if there is a chemical imbalance then medication is needed.  He is now better and runs a non-profit organization (Eustress Inc), in which he shares his experiences and encourage others to openly about their mental health illnesses.

We don’t teach our people how to cope”–Rwenshaun Miller

I spoke to two ladies that have dealt with depression. One classmate of mine (who will name Capi) says she grew up with a chip on her shoulder and would be sad, frustrated and show anger; it was inherently a part of her. She would try to mask her sadness and pretend to be happy while in school and she actually started to believe she was happy. She says she would get in little funks every now and then and cry it out, which was therapeutic and then she’ll be good for awhile. She says she knew something was wrong when people around her seem happy and showed good emotion but she wouldn’t feel anything and would even become irritable towards things that use to excite her.  Capi wanted to be happy again and “feel” again so she seek help. She says “Somewhere in the ballpark of 350 million suffer from depression and you are NEVER alone. There is always ONE person in your life who care and will listen. Seek them. Nothing is bad enough to hurt yourself over. Don’t be afraid of therapy or medication. if it helps, it’s worth it.”  Her advice to people who may not have the illnesses, who can be a good ear to listen is “Don’t ever assume you know what people are going through. If something seems off, offer a listening ear. If they reject it, don’t give up on them. “

Another lady who I associate myself with, (I’ll name her Nicole), dealt with “situational depression” when her mother passed. She says her symptoms were consistent sadness and crying and it was hard for her to do simple day to day tasks. Nicole picked up weight and started having dizziness, chest pains and panic attacks. She accepted the fact that she had a mental illness when she would go to the ER, get blood work done and the doctors wouldn’t find anything wrong with her. Her advice for people who may have the illness is “consider therapy and be open to taking meds, sometimes chemically we have to get those happy chemicals moving again. Therapists help you create healthy ways to cope, change your perspective into more positive yet realistic.” Nicole says the  symptoms that you should look out for, either as a by standing or someone suffering are; consistent anger, substance abuse and isolation.

As far as if they both still seek therapy: Nicole says she is still in therapy even though she is better and her symptoms have went away but it’s just a precaution. Capi on the other hands doesn’t practice what she preaches. She finds herself too busy but she says that’s when you need the therapy the most when dealing with stress. She adds that ” There is something about revealing your soul to an unbiased third party, that feels really good”

On that note, I’ll leave you all with this: LISTEN. ENCOURAGE SUPPORT!
