It’s that time of year again, checking out who had a great year, as far as entertainment goes. Let’s start with:

Ella Mai

thesource.com

She first got noticed by big-time producer Dj Mustard through her singing covers on Instagram. She dropped three EPs before this year but REALLY got noticed to the world, with her “Boo’d Up” single.  The radio PLAYED OUT that single but it worked out her Ella’s favor because it was No. 1 on the  Billboard Charts for R&B/Hip Hop Airplay. She has became the first female R&B singer of the 2010’s to have the longest running No. 1 single, which was 13 weeks. BTW, it’s STILL on the charts. Then there’s “Trip”, another No. 1 single, that’ still on charts (not No. 1) and NOW she just released her newest single “Shot Clock.” Ella Mai is on fire and definitely had a great year. Her album Ella Mai went gold just a week after it was released. I’m excited to see what she comes out with next year.

Tiffany Haddish

variety.com

She is a talented comedian who literally started from the bottom, to being in foster care, to sleeping in her car, to doing stand up to finally getting into movies. Last year she became the New York Times Best Seller with her book The Last Black Unicorn and just this year she’s starred in three films. Uncle Drew, which came out in July, Night School in September and Nobody’s Fool in November; not to mention she has a show with Tracey Morgan, that came out in March called the The Last OG.  I love her story and I love to see her win.

Meek Mill

rap-up.com

Meek was locked up in November 2017 due to a probation violation. He was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison. He was released in April due to a judge order. Less than three months later, he dropped a successful EP titled Legends of the Summer and he just released Championship on November, which has been successful. The album has peaked at No. 1 on the Rap Album category on Billboard.  His single “Going Bad” with Drake has peaked at No. 2 on the Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales Billboard charts. “What’s Free” featuring Rick Ross and Jay-Z peaked at number No. 3 on the Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales Billboard charts. He’s still fighting the case but in the mean time, he’s using his time wisely and getting his coins.

Cardi B

thatgrapejuice.net

It’s no surprise that this woman has had a great year BUT if ya forgot, let me remind you. Her album Invasion of Privacy debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. When “Bodak Yellow” first came out, it was No. 1 on the charts for three weeks and stayed on the charts for 35 weeks. “I Like It” peaked at No. 1 as week and remained on the charts on 36 weeks (and counting). Her WHOLE album charted and was part of the top 100 rap songs. AND every song on her album has been certified, ranging from gold to 7x Platinum. GON HEAD CARDI! Not to mention her current song “Money” has peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard chart and has been on the charts for 8 weeks. I’m not doubting that 2019 will be a great year for her. Keep going sis!

Michael B.  Jordan

thestar.com

It’s no secret that Michael B. Jordan has been on his shit this year. With Black Panther dropping in February to Creed 2 recently dropping in November, he’s had a busy year. Both roles required a lot of working out, fighting and mindet changing. In Black Panther, he played Killmonger, a misunderstood bad guy, but he had to switch to his mindset to match the revenge seeking villian. He even said that after shooting the film, he had to take a break before shooting Creed 2 but playing Killmonger, drained him. With Creed 2, his character had to train to fight his father’s killer, son. In the film he suffered from rib injuries and even though those injuries weren’t real, playing a boxing role takes a lot of energy and dedication. I commend him on knocking out these two tough roles this year. His hard work paid off because Black Panther grossed over $1 Billion in ticket sales. Creed 2 grossed $55 million it’s opening weekend. It seems like every movie that he’s starred in has had major success minus one. Clearly he’s on the roll, and I can’t wait to see his next films, preferably some sequels.

Travis Scott

celebsnetworthtoday.com

Travis’ album Astroworld went number 1 on the charts and stayed there for 8 weeks. He’s also gone on tour already. He’s had a busy year, and has gotten recognized more than what he has in the past. His song “Sicko Mode” featuring has been number 1 on the Hip Hop charts as well. He also welcomed his first child this year with Kylie Jenner. I’m proud of his success and respect his craft. Any artist who’s good at their craft, stays out of drama, he doesn’t appear cocky and minds his business deserves to win.

Ariana Grande

onstageweb.com

This young lady has had a rough but successful year. Her album Sweetener was released in August of this year, which debuted on the Billboard Top 200 in it’s first week and charted internationally. Ariana and her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller broke up in May and he ended up dying of a suicide in September. In June of this year, she became exclusive with Pete Davidson and got engaged. Just one month after Mac’s death, she and Pete broke up. With her having a rough year just within a few months, she found a way to channel her pain. In November, she released her single “thank u, next,” a song dedicated to her exes. The song charted immediately to No. 1 on Billboard and the video became the biggest music video debut in YouTube History. The “thank u, next” video earned over 55 million views in just 24 hours. Four days later, it received 100 million views, making it the fastest video to earn that amount of views in such a short time. She also performed “Natural Woman” at Aretha Franklin’s funeral in August and she did really good! To top it off, she’s been nominated for two Grammys, one for Best Pop Solo Performance for “God is a Woman” and Best Pop Vocal Album. Gon head Ariana!

These are MY top 7, comment below and tell me who you think had a great year.

Danii Gold out!

Ye Album Review

Kanye dropped his 8th album this past Friday and despite his crazy antics, his album is good. From addressing him being bipolar, to dedicating a song to his wife Kim and his daughters North and Chicago. YES, He’s been on some crazy shit lately from saying slavery was a choice to picking Whitney Houston’s drug infused bathroom as the cover art for Pusha T’s album that he produced…BUT, dude does have talent.

The Album Cover

His wife Kim (Kardashian-West) tweeted out that he JUST captured the cover art for his album Ye on the way to the listening party, literally hours before. That’s cray cray. I mean, the album cover really isn’t anything too crazy but the fact that he did it last minute just show his brain is very sporadic lol.

The Tracklist

“I Thought About Killing You”

It isn’t a secret that Kanye has some mental health issues, and specifically he came saying he was bipolar, so the first song on the track is “I Thought About Killing You.” I know….it sounds strange but in that song, some can debate that he was talking to and about his self. It literally says “Today I seriously thought about killing you, i contemplated, premeditated murder–And i think about bout killing myself and I love myself way more than I love you. You only care enough to kill someone you love—Sometimes I think really bad things.” Like I said, He could’ve been talking about someone orrrrrrrrrr he could’ve been talking about himself.

“Yikes”

In this record, he talks about some… yikes shit lol.  Pretty much how life can get hectic and specifically his personal life. He referenced  Russell Simmons getting #MeToo’ed. Then he talks about himself in third person–“See that’s why I fucks with Ye” and says that his bipolar is his super power, which is a good way to look at it to keep a positive mindset, Dude is something else.

“All Mine”

The title is self explanatory and just women in general, from Tristan (Khloe Kardashian baby daddy) cheating on her. The production on this record is dope AF.

“Wouldn’t Leave”

Kanye addressed the “Slavery Was A Choice” statement and pretty much said he could’ve said worse. All in all, he stands by his statement. BUT on the flip side, he says his wife, Kim Kardashian-West. I like how he speaks of Kim in this song, as annoying as she can be at times, but he stated that she stuck by his side while he was battling his demons, and she could’ve left him but she did and she’s appreciated for that.

“No Mistakes”

Kanye sampled Slick Rick “Hey Young World” in this song, along with having legendary singer Charlie Wilson on the record and even Kid Cudi, whom he has an album coming THIS FRIDAY June 9.

Ghost Town”

This is probably my second favorite song on the album. Kid Cudi comes back on this record singing the main chorus saying he’s been trying to make you love him but everything he does is not good enough; that’s pretty sad. Then, a young singer by the name of 070 Shake comes in on the outro of the record talking feelings of being a child and doing childish things like putting your hand on a stove knowing it’s hot, but to see if you still bleed or even hurt in general. But she also references being free saying “And nothing hurts anymore, I feel kinda free.” To me, that symbolizes having so many feelings to the point where you have to numb yourself to it and when you’re numb to certain things, it doesn’t bother you anymore. Then, sometimes you have to snap out of the numbness and see if you still have feelings, hence, putting your hand on a stove to see if you still bleed, to see if you still feel pain and have feelings. (kinda deep, I know) lol.

Lastly….

“Violent Crimes”

Long story short, this is dedicated to his daughter and it is absolutely beautiful. The lyrics are clear and self explanatory:

“Don’t grow up in a hurry”

“Niggas is savage, niggas is monster, niggas is pimp, niggas is playas, till niggas have daughter”

“I see women as something to nurture, not something to conquer”

Ye pretty much views women differently after having two daughters. He had Ty Dolla $ign hitting some vocals on the chorus too and brought 070 Shake from track 6 on this records, singing towards the end. I can’t relate but I can definitely tell where he was coming from and I respect him for that.

Overall

I love the album. I haven’t listened to a full Kanye album in a while because he’s been an asshole for a while now and even though this is the worst time to listen to his album but I was curious and I’m glad I listened to it. I STILL don’t agree with his way of thinking and antics but he is a talented artist, without a doubt. I mainly loved the slow melody tracks on this album. Him being bipolar affected his album in a positive way because with him battling his crazy thoughts is what made the album sound so dope.

I give him 4.5 stars…only because of his slavery comments, maybe even 4 stars lol. But I fucks with this Ye album.

Anybody Want To Buy A Heart Album Review

K. Michelle recently released her second album entitled “Anybody Want To Buy A Heart.” On the album she shares a lot and bares it all…physically. In her interview with Power 105.1 with the Breakfast Club, she says that some people were mad about her album cover because she was naked, but in her defense, she says she was removing all negativity from her, including what people think of her, baring it all and showing beauty and art.

She’s said in a few interviews that her album is about her previous break up with British actor Idris Elba. You may know him from Tyler Perry’s film “Daddy’s Little Girls”, “Taken”, and most recently “No Good Deed.” When asked about the break up with Elba, she said

He had the baby and it was just, kind of like I’m not going to be in the  middle of this, so I walked away from it——-It’s another woman involved. What kind of woman am I to say ‘leave your family–to come be with me’.  I think as a woman I did the right thing. — K. Michelle, interview with The Breakfast Club Power 105.1

To set the record straight, she also added that he was not married when they got together.

On her album, K. Michelle expresses herself in different styles of singing and sounds that go with her personality. Her first song “Judge Me” has a recognizable up beat to it; then she moves along to song number 2 with her hit single “Love Em All.” She had sampled the group Total’s hit song “Kissing You” in her song titled “Hard to Do.” She goes from hitting long notes, to yodeling, to singing with soul on this album. I think this album is a must hear. It took me two times to hear it, to really get the vibe from it and actually understand where she was coming from. Overall rating of this album:         four gold stars

The Pinkprint Album Review

The “Anaconda” single star Nicki Minaj dropped her third studio album “The Pinkprint” on December 12. She starts off the album with the song “All Things Go” that has  heavy bass, nice melody kick to it. She opens up about past relationships with an ex boyfriend, her mother and the death of a little cousin. I think the title means that all things come and go, like her opening up about her abortion when she was younger. This song was the best choice of hers to start the album. She then slows it down in the titled song “I lied” in which she says she lied to her guy so he wouldn’t break her heart. So she had a wall up around her heart so she wouldn’t get hurt. We’ve all been there, I know I have. Ms. Nicki switches it on up on “The Crying Game” and adds Jessie Ware, London singer whose big hit was “Wildest Moments”. She also features Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Drake, Wayne, Chris Brown, Meek Mills, Skylar Grey, and LunchMoney Lewis on her album; as well as Jermih in my favorite song titled “Favorite”.

Thinking back to when Nicki first came out, she has changed musically and physical as far as her appearance goes. She went from bright crazy color hair to nice, toned down Nicki. I’ve always liked her songs but wasn’t a big fan of her image. She definitely made a signature look with her pink Chinese bang hair-doo , her long blonde hair, and of course the big booty; but her look could never be imitated or replicated. It’s like she’s blossomed into a new lady and I like it.

As far as her album goes, I give it      four gold stars
