It’s that time of year again, checking out who had a great year, as far as entertainment goes. Let’s start with:

Ella Mai

thesource.com

She first got noticed by big-time producer Dj Mustard through her singing covers on Instagram. She dropped three EPs before this year but REALLY got noticed to the world, with her “Boo’d Up” single.  The radio PLAYED OUT that single but it worked out her Ella’s favor because it was No. 1 on the  Billboard Charts for R&B/Hip Hop Airplay. She has became the first female R&B singer of the 2010’s to have the longest running No. 1 single, which was 13 weeks. BTW, it’s STILL on the charts. Then there’s “Trip”, another No. 1 single, that’ still on charts (not No. 1) and NOW she just released her newest single “Shot Clock.” Ella Mai is on fire and definitely had a great year. Her album Ella Mai went gold just a week after it was released. I’m excited to see what she comes out with next year.

Tiffany Haddish

variety.com

She is a talented comedian who literally started from the bottom, to being in foster care, to sleeping in her car, to doing stand up to finally getting into movies. Last year she became the New York Times Best Seller with her book The Last Black Unicorn and just this year she’s starred in three films. Uncle Drew, which came out in July, Night School in September and Nobody’s Fool in November; not to mention she has a show with Tracey Morgan, that came out in March called the The Last OG.  I love her story and I love to see her win.

Meek Mill

rap-up.com

Meek was locked up in November 2017 due to a probation violation. He was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison. He was released in April due to a judge order. Less than three months later, he dropped a successful EP titled Legends of the Summer and he just released Championship on November, which has been successful. The album has peaked at No. 1 on the Rap Album category on Billboard.  His single “Going Bad” with Drake has peaked at No. 2 on the Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales Billboard charts. “What’s Free” featuring Rick Ross and Jay-Z peaked at number No. 3 on the Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales Billboard charts. He’s still fighting the case but in the mean time, he’s using his time wisely and getting his coins.

Cardi B

thatgrapejuice.net

It’s no surprise that this woman has had a great year BUT if ya forgot, let me remind you. Her album Invasion of Privacy debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. When “Bodak Yellow” first came out, it was No. 1 on the charts for three weeks and stayed on the charts for 35 weeks. “I Like It” peaked at No. 1 as week and remained on the charts on 36 weeks (and counting). Her WHOLE album charted and was part of the top 100 rap songs. AND every song on her album has been certified, ranging from gold to 7x Platinum. GON HEAD CARDI! Not to mention her current song “Money” has peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard chart and has been on the charts for 8 weeks. I’m not doubting that 2019 will be a great year for her. Keep going sis!

Michael B.  Jordan

thestar.com

It’s no secret that Michael B. Jordan has been on his shit this year. With Black Panther dropping in February to Creed 2 recently dropping in November, he’s had a busy year. Both roles required a lot of working out, fighting and mindet changing. In Black Panther, he played Killmonger, a misunderstood bad guy, but he had to switch to his mindset to match the revenge seeking villian. He even said that after shooting the film, he had to take a break before shooting Creed 2 but playing Killmonger, drained him. With Creed 2, his character had to train to fight his father’s killer, son. In the film he suffered from rib injuries and even though those injuries weren’t real, playing a boxing role takes a lot of energy and dedication. I commend him on knocking out these two tough roles this year. His hard work paid off because Black Panther grossed over $1 Billion in ticket sales. Creed 2 grossed $55 million it’s opening weekend. It seems like every movie that he’s starred in has had major success minus one. Clearly he’s on the roll, and I can’t wait to see his next films, preferably some sequels.

Travis Scott

celebsnetworthtoday.com

Travis’ album Astroworld went number 1 on the charts and stayed there for 8 weeks. He’s also gone on tour already. He’s had a busy year, and has gotten recognized more than what he has in the past. His song “Sicko Mode” featuring has been number 1 on the Hip Hop charts as well. He also welcomed his first child this year with Kylie Jenner. I’m proud of his success and respect his craft. Any artist who’s good at their craft, stays out of drama, he doesn’t appear cocky and minds his business deserves to win.

Ariana Grande

onstageweb.com

This young lady has had a rough but successful year. Her album Sweetener was released in August of this year, which debuted on the Billboard Top 200 in it’s first week and charted internationally. Ariana and her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller broke up in May and he ended up dying of a suicide in September. In June of this year, she became exclusive with Pete Davidson and got engaged. Just one month after Mac’s death, she and Pete broke up. With her having a rough year just within a few months, she found a way to channel her pain. In November, she released her single “thank u, next,” a song dedicated to her exes. The song charted immediately to No. 1 on Billboard and the video became the biggest music video debut in YouTube History. The “thank u, next” video earned over 55 million views in just 24 hours. Four days later, it received 100 million views, making it the fastest video to earn that amount of views in such a short time. She also performed “Natural Woman” at Aretha Franklin’s funeral in August and she did really good! To top it off, she’s been nominated for two Grammys, one for Best Pop Solo Performance for “God is a Woman” and Best Pop Vocal Album. Gon head Ariana!

These are MY top 7, comment below and tell me who you think had a great year.

Meek Mill is Home!

featured image: foxnews.com

Yesterday Philly rapper Meek Mill was released from a Philadelphia prison, after serving 5 months.

I’d be the first to say that I’m not a huge Meek fan, but I like a few of his songs but have yet to listen to a full album of his. Dreams & Nightmares is my shit tho!

A judge, who denied his request for bail, decision was overturned by the Philadelphia Supreme Court. If you haven’t been keeping up, he was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison for a probation violation, which stemmed from him being convicted of drug & gun charges back in 2008.

Overall, the judge had it out for Philly rapper. Reports came out that the female judge who convicted him of the 2-4 years, was trying to persuade him to sign under her friend’s record label, then wanted him to sing a Boys 2 Men song pleading for his freedom. Of course he didn’t and BOOM he’s been in jail every sense. The public has been very supportive of the injustice that’s he’s faced while this whole situation has prolonged. Celebrities from Jay-Z to T.I. to Kevin Hart have been advocates for him since the beginning and luckily they used their platforms to bring awareness of his situation, a black man being “overly” charged for unnecessary reasons.

When Meek was released, his friend Mike Rubin, who is co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, picked him up in a private helicopter and whisked him away to the 76ers playoff game against the Miami Heat, and coincidentally THEY WON! Even Kevin Hart silly ass was there with him, sitting court side. Meek was even able to ring the ceremonial Liberty Bell replica.

Not only did the the 76ers win the playoff, but they won first round, and on top of that, it’s been 5 years since they’ve been in the playoffs, so it looks like it’ll be a great year for Philly. They already won the Superbowl and if they get even further in the playoffs and not win, it’ll still be a win for them overall.

What was very meaningful to me was seeing Meek with his son on the court. I think it’s beautiful to see him reunited with one of his sons.

I’m glad that an innocent black man is free and he says he’ll be using his platform to shed light on situations like this. Social injustice is real and Meek says:

“I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues”

GO MEEK!

CARDI TALK: Album Review & Other Successes

The past few days have been magical for Cardi B. She has been killing music game for the past few months and now it came to a full circle this past weekend.

On Friday, she released her first album titled Invasion of Privacy, and guess what?? It went GOLD in the same DAY. By gold, that means she’s sold or “moved” 500,000 units of her album, but there is a slight catch to that. According to Forbes, her single “Bodak Yellow” went certified 5x-multi platinum in September, which we all heard, but just on the strength on Bodak Yellow’s success, she’s moved 500,000 units of her album already!! PLUS “Bartier Cardi” her second single just earned platinum certification as well, which is 1 Million units. So Cardi’s album won’t be shy of a plaque at all, even without the her singles booming on the charts. I’ve listened to the album at least 5 times PLUS the radio stations have been playing her whole album too; so if her album sales aren’t out of the roof, IMMA BE PISSED!

Now let’s talk about the album…DOPE. DOPE. DOPE. And I’m not just saying that because I love her. Honestly, I was getting tired of her putting out all these songs and featuring on songs WITHOUT an album coming, but she made the wait worth it. She starts out her album with the song “Get Up 10” which was a Meek Mill “Dreams & Nightmares” vibe with the storytelling lyrics. She then has a song with Migos of course, with the song “Drip”, another banga! FEATURES FEATURES FEATURES. Cardi’s features on this album were “BRAZY”. Besides Migos, she got with Chance The Rapper for the song “Best Life” which is a more positive upbeat song. Then, she got my girl Kehlani on a song called “Ring”. She also collaborated with YG for the song “She Bad”, and last but not least….”I Do” featuring SZA, another dope record. I love the sense of women getting together and sticking together, especially with the constant competition and negativity that everyone wants to bring with it.

Cardi sampled a couple of records and made them sound just as fire as the original song. Starting off the first sample on the album, “Bickenhead”, this was sample from Project Pat “Chickenhead” which I definitely remember as kid. Another sample was “I like it” from the original song “I Like It Like That” by Pete Rodriguez, which is a Latin song that she channeled her roots in, being Dominican of course. Then, as stated before, she took the flow of Meek Mill “Dreams & Nightmares” on her first song on the albums.

Now, rumors have been circulating with her being pregnant over the past few months. She FINALLY showed off her belly during her performance on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. A video circulated of her came out of her after her performance on SNL, of her saying “I’m finally free.” By that, she’s free from hiding her pregnancy and she can finally embrace it instead of hiding it in shame. She’s been compared to Lauryn Hill because she had a baby in the middle of her career and of course she was the first female rapper to top the billboards with no features with ‘That Thing (Doo Woop) and here we are, years later, Cardi did the same thing with Bodak Yellow. Ironic ehh.

Many other artists have congratualed on her pregnancy and album release including 50Cent, Rihanna, EVEN OPRAH!

All in all, I’m sooooooooooo proud of her. From the strip club to being Instagram famous, to Love & Hip Hop New York, to being number 1 on the billboard chart to having a dope ass album! I love it and I love how her success has soared.

GO BARDI CARDI!!!

BET Awards 2015

WOW! This year’s BET Awards was one of the best that the network has had in a while. From bringing out Bad Boy to doing the Smokey Robinson tribute AND a tribute to Janet Jackson.

Kendrick Lamar opened up the stage with the American flag waving while he performed on a graffiti filled police car. His performance related to what’s actually going on in the real world with police brutality and the confederate flag issue. K-Dot, his new nickname, set the stage on fire performing his new single “Alright.” The hosts of the show Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross made their appearance in leotards, singing “Conqueror” by Estelle and Jussie Smollet, while Ms. Tracee was swinging from a harness. Entertaining to say the least.

Actresses Laverne Cox and Gabrielle Union presented the first awards wearing the same chic white dress. They announced that Terence Howard won the best actor award for his work in the FOX show “Empire”, so you know my girl Taraji P Henson had to win the Best Actress Award. Janelle Monae tore the stage up switching her style to sexy and seductive, singing her new song “Yoga” then new artist Jidenna came out singing “Classic Man”, and his attire matched his song title.

OF COURSE Nicki Minaj took the award for Best Female Hip Hop artist, who else would EVEN come close to winning that award in that category…NO ONE! K-Dot took the award for Best Hip Hop artist in a tough category with J.Cole, Drake, Common, Big Sean and Wale. The lovely Sam Smith won the award for Best New Artist, but he was not there to accept….because he is white and he didn’t think he would win LOL, says the comedian Anthony Anderson who accepted the award on his behalf. CB (Chris Brown) took home the award for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist AND The Fandemonium Award, as well as the Viewer’s Choice Award for the song “Only” alongside with Nicki Minaj, Drake and Wayne. Ms. Bey won the award for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and Video of the year for her video “7/11″ and she was in those categories with some great artists……..who were actually at the awards. How many years has it been since she was at the awards??? ANYWHO, the group Rae Sremmurd won the Best Group Award for their songs ” No Flex Zone” and “Throw Some Mo”. The Best Collaboration category, was a competitive one with Chris Brown featuring Tyga and Lil Wayne, Big Sean & E-40, August Alsina (BAE) & Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown AGAIN featuring Usher & Rick Ross, Common & John Legend, and lastly Mark Ronso & Bruno Mars but the song “Glory” by Common & John Legend took home the win, which was on the Selma soundtrack. The film won the Best Movie Award as well.

OMG, the performances though…AMAZING!!! As I said before Kendrick hit the stage, then of course BET has their Music Matters singers that they showcase; Andra Day and Avery Wilson “sang” their hearts out. The Weeknd performed his new single “The Hills” and “Earned It” with Alicia Keys helping him on the piano. One of the BEST performances of the night was the Bad Boy Reunion. Diddy came out rapping “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” then of course he had to bring MA$E out to help him sing the anthem “Bad Boy.” THEN 112 came out singing “Peaches & Cream” THROWBIKE *Plies Voice*. The stunning Faith Evan sang “Love Like This.” Jadakiss came out with the crew to rap “All About Benjamins”…thennnnn Diddy fell, but he bounced back real quick, then Lil Kim popped up…literally to spit her verse. The song then shifted to the crew rapping “Mo Money Mo problems” and ending the song with Biggie’s verse. The reunion performance ended with Pharrell and Diddy singing “Fenna Get Loose” and with back up dancers killing a soul train line.

The other BEST performance of the night, was the Smokey Robinson Tribute. Tori Kelly sang the Jackson 5 hit “Who’s Loving You.” When I say that girl killed that performance, she did just that! She’s got some people asking “Who is this gorgeous white girl with the lovely voice?” Well Tori Kelly started making YouTube videos of her singing covers of songs at age 14. She is a former American Idol contestant of Season 9 but unfortunately didn’t make it to the top 24 contestants; but that didn’t stop her. She started working independently writing and producing her own music, until she got noticed by Capitol Records, and got signed to them last year. More recently, she debuted her first album “Unbreakable Smile” this past June. Robin Thicke also performed in the tribute singing the 1965 classic “Ooo Baby Baby”. Ne-Yo hit the stage singing “The Tears of a Clown.” Then Mr. Smokey himself had to shut it down singing “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Cruisin.” Then all four artist ended the tribute singing “My Girl.” He also accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The last great performance was the Janet Jackson tribute. Singers Tinashe, Ciara and Jason Derulo paid homage to the Ultimate Icon. The humble Janet Jackson accepted her award being so soft spoken and grateful for her award.

Other great performances of the night was Big Sean rapping “IDFWU”, “Blessed” and ” One Man Can Change the world”, then Meek Mills, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj their new hit “All Eyes on You.” Of course it was adorable since Meek and Nicki are dating.

Tom Joyner took home the award Humanitarian of the Year for donating over $65 Million to HBCUs. Lastly Fetty Wap closed out the Awards singing the well-known hit “Trap Queen.”  BET did their thang with this year’s award show. I’m definitely looking forward  to next year.
