Fresh Prince Reunion: Memory-Filled and Tear-Jerker

It’s been 30 years since the The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air aired on television and it is still a fan favorite to this day. The cast (old and new) decided to have a sit down on the replica set to reminisce on their time on the show.

Karyn Parsons who played Hilary Banks, spoke out about Will reciting her lines back to her on the pilot show. Then they took a dive back to other episodes when Will mouthed the lines of his co-stars as they were citing them LIVE, such as an episode when Don Cheadle appeared in the first season. That showed Will’s work ethic; he knew everyone’s lines and that’s just perfection!

Who could forget the moments that Jazzy Jeff was thrown out of the mansion countless times–over 150 takes, as he stated. Thankfully the producers decided to use old takes so Jazz wouldn’t have to torture anymore. (lol)

The tear-jerker moment came when they showed a montage of James Avery moments. The whole cast was visibly emotional while watching it, especially Will when talking about the father-son episode/ moment between him and James. He stated that James influenced his acting and helped shaped him. The rest of the cast had nothing but great things to say about James Avery; Tatyana Ali said that he hipped her to Jazz music and the history behind.

A trivial moment was when Will sat down Janet Hubert, A.K.A. Dark-Skin Aunt Viv. It was the first time they seen each other in 27 years and possibly since her departure from the show. He opened up about how he felt about her at the time of the show and him being unaware of what she was going through while being on set and pregnant. She added that she was in an abusive marriage at the time so all of that plus the network recasting her role because she didn’t accept their offer was a lot on Janet Hubert. The two buried the hatchet and Janet even made an appearance on the set to see her old castmates and even meet the other aunt Viv, Daphne Maxwell Reid for the first time.

Everything was a full circle, coming to Jesus moment because Will had said some not-so-nice things about Janet in the past and she did the same plus spoke out about the other cast members. It was great to see the family back together, looking great and most importantly embracing each other with love.

Aladdin Review

If you’re a 90’s baby like myself, then you truly loved and enjoyed Disney movies, one in particular Aladdin. During that time, Princess Jasmine was the closest thing to a Disney brown skin princess besides Pocahontas, which was nice to see, me being a woman of color. This movie would make you feel like a kid again.

The intro starts off pretty similar to the original movie, except Disney added the genie, played by Will Smith, telling the story of Aladdin in the beginning. Genie also was telling the story to his two children which will be a significance at the end of the film. Of course the real life action movie couldn’t be an exact replicate of the original but that’s what made it so great! The fact that the story line was still in tact plus Disney showcased the Arabian culture with their clothing and dancing style which was good because it’s nice to see the lifestyle of other cultures.

Disney addressed women’s right in a sense. When Jafar wanted to take over and be the Sultan, Jasmine brought up the fact that she could be the Sultan. Of course the idea was shot down but towards the end of the film she got the respect she deserved as the female Sultan.

Will Smith is dope! Of course that is obvious but I had to say it. He didn’t try to be like Robin but instead, he acted like his normal goofy self. Will is usually a great big ball of in energy, especially when his character as Fresh Prince. He played a sentimental role and honestly, the film wouldn’t have been comedic or as relevant without him.

The actor and actress who played Aladdin and Jasmine perfected A Whole New World. Them singing the song brought back so many childhood memories. Besides that song, all the other songs were brought to life and were sang to perfection. Will Smith even threw his own twang and beat boxing to the songs.

Of course the creation of the movie wouldn’t be visually appeasing without CGI (computer-generated imagery), from the genie’s appearance, to Abu’s appearance, to EVERYTHING else in between. God bless CGI because it truly made the cartoon film come to life.

As a whole, the film was dope! I do wish that the characters were more brown skin but they weren’t too far off. The music was on point and so was the culture depiction. I tried not to give too many spoilers so others can still go see the movie and still read this beforehand.

I encourage everyone to go see the movie, especially if you were a 90’s baby. I give them movie 5 stars!

Danii Gold out!

He’s been such a positive figure since he’s came out. He hasn’t been caught in any scandals. He has a beautiful wife, whom I LOVE, Jada Pinkett; and three beautiful kids Tre, Willow and Jaden. You can tell he’s raised them right, and taught them to be true to themselves.

#OscarsWhiteout Nominations 2016

The list of Oscar Nominations came out yesterday and as person could notice, there was something missing from the categories—black actors/actresses. I understand that the year 2015 wasn’t a big year for us, Blacks people to star in a lot of movies. A few movies that came out last year starring Black people were:

  • Selma

  • Focus

  • Straight Outta Compton

  • The Perfect Guy

  • Beast Of No Nation

  • Concussion

  • Creed

Maybe a few more, but anyhow, Selma already received “some” recognition by, at least, getting a nomination for “Best Motion Picture” and won the award for “Best Original Song” created by John Legend and Common.

As far as the other movies, there should have been a nomination for at least Will Smith in either movie he starred in;  O’Shea Jackson Jr, Jason Mitchell, and or Corey Hawkins for playing Ice Cube, Eazy E and Dr. Dre; Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut and Michael Ealy for The Perfect Guy; Idris Elba in “Beasts of No Nation”; and finally Michael B Jordan for playing in “Creed.”

Speaking of the movie “Creed”, actor Sylvester Stallone was able to get a nomination for his supporting role as Rocky Balboa. Even a few days ago he won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the Golden Globe Awards. How is it that, he was able to get  two nominations, and one that turned into a win–for a SUPPORTING role, which is okay, BUT how come the leading actor Michael B Jordan wasn’t able to snag at least one nomination? That’s not right at all. One reason why I think that Sylvester Stallone was able to get a nomination and win, is because he’s gotten some recognition in the past for his roles playing Rocky Balboa in the Rocky movies. The movies as a whole were nominated for four awards and the First Rocky Movie won the Best Picture Award. Stallone was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Rocky IV movie. So, I feel that the executives think they owe at least a nomination to the man, since he’s gotten nominations in the past–BULL SHIT right, but that’s my opinion.

According to Marc Malkin, from E News, he says that this is the second year in a row where all 20 actors and actresses nominated are white and he says sarcastically that you can guarantee that the hash tag for the night of the show will be #OscarWhiteOut

On the brighter side, Chris Rock is hosting the awards (the least they can do, right?) and I’m sure he’ll have the crowd laughing and cracking a few jokes about the obvious snugs.

I don’t think I will be watching this year. Only because I believe boycotting, along with other black celebrities, will show white America that this acknowledge is in order and once their ratings show a decline, the executives will get it together.
