Grammy’s 2016

The show opened up with Taylor Swift performing a new song in a bedazzled out jump suit. LL COOL J began hosting reminiscing about past performers like Adele, Kendrick Lamar, and Lady Gaga. Kendrick Lamar won the first award of the night taking home Best Rap Album. The Weeknd graced the stage performing “Can’t feel My Face” & “In The Night”

One performance I really enjoyed was Ella Goulding and Andra Day. Andra’s voice is AMAZING.  A collection of artists paid homage to Lionel Richie. John Legend performed “Sunday Morning”, Demi Lavato performed “I love It”. Meghan Trainor performed “You are the sun, you are the way”, Tyrese performed “Brick House”and closing it out, the man himself, Lionel Richie performed “All Night Long”

Ed Sheeran beat out Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift and Wiz Khalifa for song of the year for his hit “Thinking Out Loud.” I honestly love that song and I am glad he won. HE has a beautiful voice!

Kendrick Lamar, had an outstanding performance. He walked out with chains on his ankles and wrists, with the setting being in a jail, performing “Alright.” Some performers dressed like inmates and the others dressed in African attire. Miquel showed his face by singing Michael Jackson’s song “She’s Out of My Life.” Adele who hasn’t performed at the Grammys in four years, performed a new song for us. Meghan Trainor took home her first Grammy award for Best New Artist, and she made me cry with her accepting her award in tears. (I’m a big baby). Now Lady Gaga was the only performer to pay a tribute to David Bowie, and she did amazing as usual.

So the show didn’t show all the wins, mainly a lot of performances but I did some research and here is what I found out:

Kendrick Lamar: Best Rap Album; Best Rap Song “Alright”; Best Rap/Sung Collaboration “These Walls” featuring Bilal, Anna Wise, and Thundercat; Best Rap Performance; Best Music Video with Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood”

The Weeknd: Best R&B Performance for “Earned It”; Best Urban Contemporary Album,

Taylor Swift: Album of the Year; Best Pop Vocal Album; Best Music Video “Bad Blood”,

Ed Sheeran: Best Solo Pop Performance; Song of the Year

It really irked me that they did not show all the winners. It was a lot of performances and honestly only cared for about 40% of them.

Kendrick had a powerful performances that dealt with today’s society of black men and his song “Alright” in general speaks about that. i am surprised that CBS, or the Grammy’s in general let him perform it that way but I AM PROUD that he did. Someone with that much power and attention should speak about real life issues.

#OscarsWhiteout Nominations 2016

The list of Oscar Nominations came out yesterday and as person could notice, there was something missing from the categories—black actors/actresses. I understand that the year 2015 wasn’t a big year for us, Blacks people to star in a lot of movies. A few movies that came out last year starring Black people were:

  • Selma

  • Focus

  • Straight Outta Compton

  • The Perfect Guy

  • Beast Of No Nation

  • Concussion

  • Creed

Maybe a few more, but anyhow, Selma already received “some” recognition by, at least, getting a nomination for “Best Motion Picture” and won the award for “Best Original Song” created by John Legend and Common.

As far as the other movies, there should have been a nomination for at least Will Smith in either movie he starred in;  O’Shea Jackson Jr, Jason Mitchell, and or Corey Hawkins for playing Ice Cube, Eazy E and Dr. Dre; Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut and Michael Ealy for The Perfect Guy; Idris Elba in “Beasts of No Nation”; and finally Michael B Jordan for playing in “Creed.”

Speaking of the movie “Creed”, actor Sylvester Stallone was able to get a nomination for his supporting role as Rocky Balboa. Even a few days ago he won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the Golden Globe Awards. How is it that, he was able to get  two nominations, and one that turned into a win–for a SUPPORTING role, which is okay, BUT how come the leading actor Michael B Jordan wasn’t able to snag at least one nomination? That’s not right at all. One reason why I think that Sylvester Stallone was able to get a nomination and win, is because he’s gotten some recognition in the past for his roles playing Rocky Balboa in the Rocky movies. The movies as a whole were nominated for four awards and the First Rocky Movie won the Best Picture Award. Stallone was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Rocky IV movie. So, I feel that the executives think they owe at least a nomination to the man, since he’s gotten nominations in the past–BULL SHIT right, but that’s my opinion.

According to Marc Malkin, from E News, he says that this is the second year in a row where all 20 actors and actresses nominated are white and he says sarcastically that you can guarantee that the hash tag for the night of the show will be #OscarWhiteOut

On the brighter side, Chris Rock is hosting the awards (the least they can do, right?) and I’m sure he’ll have the crowd laughing and cracking a few jokes about the obvious snugs.

I don’t think I will be watching this year. Only because I believe boycotting, along with other black celebrities, will show white America that this acknowledge is in order and once their ratings show a decline, the executives will get it together.

Golden Globe Awards: My favorite highlights

The Golden Globes were alright to me…just alright. The highlight of the night for me, other than Denzel Washington winning the Cecile B. Millie Award, was one of my favorite actresses winning the award for Best Actress in A Drama Television Series–Taraji P Henson. I just LOVE this lady. This was her first Golden Globe win and really her first BIG win as her role on Empire, playing Cookie Lyon. She rocked a white Stella McCartney Gown to the show.

Before Taraji’s speech, when it was announced that she won the award, she started handing out cookies to people in the crowd on her way up to the stage. HA, now that was hilarious.  Her speech was everything and she was being herself, and that’s real. In her speech, she says that it’s odd that she got her award for playing a woman who sold crack and spent 17 years in jail versus, her getting an award for a more positive role, like what she had played in the Karate Kid. But she says “The World Loves Real.” Here’s the video below:

I wish her more success and more awards in the future and I will continue to be a fan of hers.

Should We be Shaming Steve Harvey for his common mistake?

So clearly the Internet has been buzzing about Steve Harvey and the Miss Universe pageant. If you haven’t heard here’s what happened: Comedian, Actor, Author and Talk Show Host Steve Harvey hosted the 2015 Miss Universe pageant. The two finalist were, Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines. Steve accidentally announced Miss Colombia as the Miss Universe winner…… But really it was Miss Philippines that won, according to the announcement card. After he realized his mistake, he apologized and said who the correct winner was. He even made a few tweets about the accident.

My question is: Was it a common mistake? Should he have been paying attention to the card? Was the announcement card arrange wrong where it could have been confusing?

In my opinion I believe that the organizers of the show probably went over the structure of the announcement card with him, BUT but it was in very fine print where it says that Miss Philippines was the winner. Honestly, honestly where the winner was located on the card is probably where his thumb was, holding the announcement card.  BUT that’s my opinion.

Why “The Wiz Live!” was AMAZING

I personally thought The Wiz Live was greatness. Not only was it inspired by the movie The Wiz starring Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Richard Pryor and many more but the movie added it’s own touch of 22nd century to it. Here is my list of the Top 5 reasons why The Wiz Live:

 1. ADDAPERLE—JUST ADDAPERLE

Addaperle, also known as The Good Witch of the North, made her appearance wearing ALL BLUE, from her hair, all the way down to her shoes. She gave me an auntie vibe. Like one of your hip, middle aged, sweet aunties in your family. She gave Dorothy a kiss for protection and sent her on her way.

2. NE-YO PLAYING THE TIN MAN

ALL of the songs that he sang were perfection!!! “Slide some oil on me” and my favorite song ” What Would I Do, If I Could Feel.” It was so touching. On another note, this guy said “Why the shade?” AND he even hit the new dance, the “dab”; even though it’ origin comes from a strong form of weed, but that’s neither here nor there. Overall I loved his performance.

3. CHOREOGRAPHY WAS BOMB

EMERALD CITY VOGUE was live, and the dancing wasn’t over kill. It looked so smooth, clean and perfected. The dancers didn’t over work themselves. I LOVED IT. Also the “Poppies” dance was very exotic and sexy. I would not have expected that dancing for this kind of musical, but it was in tune and also clean cut.

4. THE COSTUMES

The Emerald City dancers costumes were legit as hell, just like their dancing AND the Poppies outfits went with their dancing…EXOTIC. I do like the the fact they added flowers on the costumes (i.e Poppy Flowers), OH and I definitely didn’t forget about Ms. Mary J. Blige. It was a cute dress minus the gadgets but since they were applied, it added an “Evil Affect” to her with the wire swirls, and the head pieces and just the black look overall. Her boots she wore were HOT and looked comfy too. I didn’t too much care for her acting in the musical but I loved her outfit lol.

5. QUEEN LATIFAH PLAYING THE WIZ

Let me break it down without going on a rant:

  • Her outfit was great…and green
  • She played a powerful character, as a black WOMAN, and the original “Wiz” was a black MAN.
  • Casting her was showing gender equality.
  • With her playing a male role then being exposed as a woman, shows that the director didn’t mind stepping out of the box.
  • Last but not least, anything she touches, she kills it.

Empire Season Finale

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!! That Empire Season Finale last night was a must-see. The show started off with Jamal being nominated for an American Sound Award for his R & B sound “Heavy”, which is like  a comparison to the Billboard Awards.  Alicia Keys was in the previous episode playing a singer name Skye Summers; her and Jamal had a little connection and a even small kissing scene. In last night’s show Jamal and Skye performed a song at a nominee party and rocked it. Charlamagne Tha God made an appearance on the show, at the nominee party throwing shade as usual. He called out Skye for being mixed and not really being black. He even called out Jamal for being gay and saying that fans would be confused about his gender preference. Y’all know how Charlamagne can get.

empire-209-jamal-sky-kiss- onyxreel kiss

Moving along, Jamal is on fire at this point, he stars in a Pepsi Commercial which is aired on the show and he gets two more ASA nominations such as: Video of the Year for “Heavy” and Video of the Year with his brother Hakeem for the video “Ain’t About the Money.” AND one more nomination for Song of the Year for “Power” and his dad Luscious was along side in the category as well for his song “Boom Boom Boom.”

 Video credit: Youtube.com

Meanwhile, Luscious business partner Meme White tells everyone that Camilla, Hakeem’s old flame, is her wife. JUICY RIGHT??? Anywho, Luscious, Meme and the Board of Trustees have a meeting and Meme blasts Luscious by showing a video of him talking bad about the members of the board, saying he would get rid of them if they vote against him, well since Empire is now public, Meme calls for a meeting to vote to remove Luscious as CEO of Empire.

In the midst of all that, Camilla pays Hakeem a visit, even though the cameras didn’t show it, but the audience is pretty sure that she tries to persuade Hakeem to vote against his dad–SCANDALOUS.

While all of that is going on, Cookie goes to the prison where she spent 17 years at, and holds a concert there, bringing along Hakeem an his new singer girlfriend Laura. After the performance, Cookie tells Hakeem about the marriage between Camilla and Meme and of course he didn’t know.

At the meeting, 4 people voted against Luscious and the ones that did vote for him were himself of course, Jamal, Andre…but Hakeem voted against his dad, with the help of Camilla’s persuasion. So with Luscious being out, Meme announces that she is handing over her position to Camilla, her wife. Sooooo technically Camilla can give Empire to Hakeem if she wanted to and it seems like that was her plan.

Lastly, Anika has been visiting Rhonda, Andre’s wife, because Rhonda is pregnant with the official grandson of the family and Anika got pregnant by Hakeem but he doesn’t know yet. Welllll, somehow Rhonda’s alarm system went off while she was in the house alone and she gets pushed down the stairs by an intruder and she dies.Hmmmmmmm I’m thinking it was Anika because she seems jealous of Rhonda being open with her pregnancy and she, Anika, can’t. Tisk Tisk.

The next season doesn’t start until March but I’m sure it’ll be a good start.

That’s all I got for ya! Leave your comments below!!

Barbershop 3: The Next Cut in theater next year!

I am soooo excited to announce that there would be a new Barbershop coming out next year, April 15, 2016.

The film will have some of it’s original cast members such as Ice Cube, Cedric The Entertainer, Eve and Sean Patrick Thomas. The movie even added a few new faces like, the lovely Regina Hall, one of my favorite actresses; and the talented Ms. Nicki Minaj.

Malcolm D Lee, the director of this film, has also directed The Best Man, The Best Man Holiday, Roll Bounce, Undercover Brother and many more; so you KNOW that this film will be a MUST-SEE plus Ice Cube is in the movie and he never lets us down.

Here is a trailer for the movie that is coming out next April.
