The Chi Season 5 Recap; Renewed for Season 6!

The Chi wrapped another great season this past weekend airing its season 5 finale. Each season never ceases to amaze its viewers. Each character’s storyline ended how some of us wanted it to end and not.

Emmett, Tiff and Kiesha

Credit: Alexis Renee Celebrity Myxer

In episode 1 Tiff, played by Hannaha Hall, made it clear that she didn’t want to be married to Emmett anymore, so she moved out and in with her supplier Rob, played by Iman Shumpert. For a mother to move in with a semi-random man with her child is impetuous. She jumped from one relationship to the next and it seems she did so out of hurt. Yes, Emmett cheated on Tiff for the duration of their relationship, but he was too late on getting his act together.

Alexis Renee Celebrity Myxer

Emmett, played by Jacob Latimore, gets closer to Kiesha, played by Birgundi Baker, on a deeper level this season. He’s had a past sexual relationship with her and to be exact, Season 1, episode 1 started out with them having sex and here we are 4 seasons later episode 1, he’s having wet dreams about her and essentially ends up being in a relationship with her.

Tiff grows jealous of Emmett being a better man to Kiesha than he was to her. It seems that Emmett needed just one more chance to prove himself to Tiff but she was over it (at the time). After throwing herself at Emmett and getting rejected, Tiff decided to kickback. In the end, they all come to an understanding and even attend EJ’s (Emmett & Tiff’s son) parent-teacher conference. What a happy ending!

Trigg

Alexis Renee Celebrity Myxer

Trigg, played by Luke James, went from being a street dude to a City Council Candidate. The season starts out with him setting up a proposal to his girlfriend Imani but she ended up standing him up due to a viral video coming out of him beating up the neighborhood nuisance Bakari.

MEAWW

With Bakari being misguided and being Ronnie’s killer in season 4, Trigg decides to take him in, with Shad persuading him. While running for council, Douda helps him get “the look” which included a fake girlfriend. While having the eye candy on his arm, he meets a transgender woman named Fatima, played by L’lerrét Jazelle. Trigg struggles with having a fake image but wants to keep his personal life with Fatima private until he wins the election. In the end, he confesses to the public that his image was a lie and that he has a new woman in his life. The supporters respect him for his honesty. Another happy ending story.

Shad

Chicago Tribune

Not only is Jason Weaver, played by Shad, a monumental actor in the industry, but the transition of his character is inspiring. He’s introduced to the show in Season 4 when he’s released from prison. He struggled with adjusting to society and even getting a job. In season 5, he works at the Non-Profit-ROCK and he even offers advice to the knuckleheads causing a disturbance in the community. To see him shine and even meet a woman that likes him for his genuine personality and reformed attitude is simply amazing. Go Shad!

Jada and Darnell

Erica Vain

I LOVE Jada and Darnell. To hear the story of them being high school sweethearts; having a baby and drifting apart, to becoming friends again and lovers; is remarkable. If you remember in past seasons, Darnell, played by Rolando Boyce, has had many wives and many children; I’m sure it’ll get brought back up in the upcoming seasons. Jada, played by Yolanda Ross, was a cougar to a young man named Sway, not too far from Emmett’s age. Yes, it was nice of Sway to be by Jada’s side during her battle with cancer, but’s let face it, they were never going to last. He probably wanted children and she was probably done with children, hell she’s a grandmother to 3 boys. If Darnell wouldn’t come back into the picture, there would’ve been another reason for her and Sway breaking up. I’m here for the rekindled relationship/marriage between Jada and Darnell.

Jake and Jemma

The-now teenagers are halfway through high school and the topic of life after high school becomes a big topic of discussion, especially since Jemma, played by Judae’a Brown, is pregnant with Jake’s baby. Jemma initially wants to get rid of the baby but Jake, played by Michael Epps, wants to keep it because he never had a father growing up. Jemma eventually changes her mind and tells her father about the pregnancy and he supports her decision.

Side Note: I love Jemma and her father’s relationship. She’s so honest with him and unapologetic when it comes to her thoughts and feelings, and her father receives it so well.

Jemma takes an interest in Myesha’s, played by Genesis Denise Hale, rap career and wants to be her manager. Just when things were going great, Jemma loses her baby while at Myesha’s show due to gunshots and a fight caused by Bakari. After healing, Jemma decides to take a gap year after high school to manage Myesha’s rap career. Her father is on board if she is successful with it.

Wherever-I-Look

Douda

Distractify

Douda, played by Curtiss Cook, doesn’t know what he wants to do. Does he want to be a good guy and live a clean life with Tracy? Does he want to continue to live the street life and still have one foot in the door with the political

Kevin

Last but not least Kevin, played by Alex Hibbert. Kevin used to be an integral part of the show. He witnessed a murder, dealt with PTSD, shot a man, experienced his father dying, his mom got re-married AND his sister was kidnapped, abused, and had a baby. Lil Kev has been through a lot and with that, he smokes often and prefers to play video games. Playing video games is making him so much money that he wants to get emancipated and move out. Kevin says he feels trapped but it seems to viewers that he has plenty of freedom at this point since things in his home life have been lax.

Are we surprised that The Chi has been renewed for a 6th season? I’m not.

Let me know your thought on this season and who’s your favorite character?

Queen & Slim Was Everything…BUT…

By now everyone has seen Lena Waithe’s critically-acclaimed, harsh reality film Queen & Slim. It’s been the talk of media every since. The film shows drama, a thrill, anticipation and unfortunately reality. The innocence of Queen and Slim quickly turned from that to fatal survival. Queen was a attorney and Slim was a religious “good catch.” Those two blended personalities created the perfect storyline—knowing the system and having faith.

The movie was great BUT there were a few things that seemed odd, For one, Queen’s attitude from the beginning through the middle of the film was stank. I understood that she was an attorney and her client had received the death penalty and the only reason she decided to get dinner with Slim is because she didn’t feel like being alone. Sooo it seems like she only went out with him because she wanted a free meal.

Needless to say, Slim aka Earnest, was still in good spirits. He remained a gentleman throughout everything, even when he was harassed by the police. When his protective reflexes kicked in when the officer shot Queen, he had to think fast and protect himself and her, which led to him killing the officer.

You would think that Queen being an attorney, she would make better suggestions on what to do after that but she insisted on her and Slim running.

One scene where Slim didn’t act the wisest, is when he and Queen went to the gas station to fill up but since they didn’t have any cash, they wanted the cashier to give them the gas for free with the persuasion of having a gun.  The weirdo cashier wanted to hold the gun that Slim was pointing at him. What did Slim do? He gave the gun to him…without taking the clip out.

Luckily the guy didn’t shoot him.

The most comedic part of the film was from Queen’s uncle Earl, played by Bokeem Woodbine. He was an ex-army, turned pimp…or just a guy with 3-4 girlfriends, who stayed in New Orleans. He had a bad accent but he was quite entertaining.

A random scene that we could’ve done without is when Queen and Slim left uncle Earl’s house in New Orleans, and they seen the horses and she suggested Slim get on one. If you’re on the run then maybe you shouldn’t be lolly gaggin on some horses.

One important thing that I LOVED is the support they received by strangers while on the run, starting with the guy that they accidentally hit and took to the hospital. The people at the bar just danced around them and the bartender said they were safe there. There was even a white couple who let them hide out in their house, which led to a black police officer finding them in the couple’s garage. The officer stared them dead in the eye and let them go!

Then there was the ONE black guy who snitched on Queen and Slim just to get the reward money. Of course he wasn’t loyal enough to not snitch on them because he didn’t know them, but damn he could’ve been like the other supportive black folks.

In the midst of all that, the pair came across a young boy who was inspired by what they did even though it cost them to be on the run. The young boy was participating in a protest when he decided to pull a gun on a black police officer and shot him in the face. As a result of that, the young boy was killed. The pair didn’t know that they had that much influence over people, let alone the youth. Honestly, that was a sad scene that I could’ve done without.

Lastly, the ending…..when it was coming to an end, Queen said she wanted to live and they both talked about having a legacy and being part of each other’s legacy. Yes, in a perfect world, the two would’ve went to Cuba and lived a low profile life until whenever. BUT unfortunately, Queen and Slim were gunned down…no weapon in sight….hands shown in plain sight…and yet they were gunned down, Queen being shot first.

Image result for queen and slim last scene"

I found it interesting that we never heard they’re names mentioned throughout the movie. We assumed they were “Queen” and “Slim” but after they’re tragic death we found out they were Angela and Earnest.

Overall the film was great BUT there were a few unnecessary scenes and questionable character moves. I loved that it was 70% realistic and that it was black written and directed. The black excellence within and behind the scenes of the film was EVERYTHING.

“The Chi” Season 2 Finale and Jason Mitchell Allegations

Lena Waithe’s show The Chi is one of the best shows out right now. It tackles the everyday life of individuals, ages ranging from 12 years old, all the up to a character in his 40s. The show is set in Chicago, hence the title.

Recent Allegations

Recently, allegations have came out regarding one of the stars of the show Jason Mitchell, playing the character Brandon. You may know him from Straight Outta Compton, playing Eazy-E, SuperFly, Mudbound, Detroit and a few more movies. Jason has been accused by several cast mates, including his love interest co-star Tiffany Boone (playing Jerrika), of sexual harassment. It’s sad to be a victim harassment especially when you are disrespected by a co-star that you work very close with, intimately.

vibe.com

Another sad case is that Jason’s character, Brandon, is a good guy but Lena Waithe has decided to fire him from the show and he won’t return for season 3. Tiffany Boone has decided that she won’t return for season 3 neither, which is understandable. Tiffany had filed multiple complaints on set regarding Jason’s behavior starting from season one. Her claims were taken serious enough for everyone on set to be required to attend a sexual harassment training. After the training, the harassment calmed down but then it started back up and from then, Lena Waithe had to take matters in her own hands and fire Jason. The blame is not to be placed on Lena firing Jason later than expected but she says she does not own The Chi and that she’s the creator and sold the show of course. She was able to push her way in to hire a different show runner for season two and even put fire under HR to handle the situation immediately. They didn’t so she did. Since Jason and Tiffany are very important characters, it makes you wonder how the show is going to play out.

Season 3 Finale

In the finale, Brandon’s food truck gets searched by Chicago PD because his investor, Mr. Perry is part of the 63rd gang. A gun is found in the truck and Brandon has to explain where it came from in order to not get charged. Jerrika was not feeling him getting locked up and all in all, she wasn’t about that life because she is from a different background from Brandon. So BOOM, she gives him back the ring and moves out.

On the other end, Reggie gets killed!!! We all know who had something to do with it……Mr. Perry. Reggie is always being watched by Mr. Perry because he’s one of his lead guys.

gomovies.tube

In the last episode, Mr. Perry speaks with Reggie about offering Jake a legit job at Perry’s pizza and taking him under his wing. Perry wanted to take Jake under his wing because he knew that he was going to hire someone to kill Reggie. As much as I hated Reggie, he was slowly growing on me and he was even entertaining but he was making the “business” look bad, from beating up his workers in public, to being reckless in general. It was bound to happen. Jake was escorted out of his house because either A.)Reggie is killed and he needs to go to foster care or B.) He’s being arrested because he’s been selling smh. Then there’s Emmett, he’s a manager now, paying child support, getting his own spot and then some. BUT he got one of his baby mamas pregnant again. DAMMIT EMMETT. You were doing so well. He is also tryna get back good with Kiesha (Kevin’s sister), especially since he had Reggie take care of Kiesha’s older boyfriend who so happened to be her track coach. Ronnie finally confronts his dad about not being in his life, despite him leaving across the street from him all his life. This season ended good enough for you to want to watch season 3.

Assumptions for Season 3

I have so many questions and concerns like, what will the show be like for the next season? In episode 10 Brandon and Jerrika broke up and since Brandon is working with the Chicago PD to take down Mr. Perry in order to save himself, wouldn’t he need to make an appearance? I know that Alice (Detective Toussaint) said she would protect him so does that mean that he’s going into witness protection?? Will Kevin leave the public school and go to the private school? Will he stay so Papa won’t be alone at school since Jake “may” be locked up? Is Reggie REALLY dead? Will Jake get bailed out and adopted by Mr. Perry? Will Emmett get back with Kiesha and tell her about his findings on her older ex-boyfriend? Will Emmett get back with his baby mama in order to raise their next child? So many questions. What are your thoughts? Comment below and let me know.

BET Stepping It Up!

Within the past year or two BET has been on their shit! They fell off the grid for a while and played the safe route by just playing old reruns of shows but it lost it’s music factor and only had it’s award shows to show for their music.  But starting in 2017 is when they got their juice back.

In 2017, “The New Edition” 3-Part mini series aired and I would say that was the start of them getting their groove back. The series got over 28 million views, making it the highest rated biopic.

In the summer of 2017 Irv Gotti Presents “Tales”, which had the BEST stories that came from Hip Hop songs

Then late summer of last year, BET presented us with “The Bobby Brown Story.”

Another series they just added is “The Family Business” which features Tami Roman, Darrin Henson, Clifton Powell and many more.

They have more coming including the new series “America Soul”, which is the story behind Soul Train. The series stars stars Sinqua Walls who is playing Don Cornelius; you may know him from “Power”, he played Kanan’s son.

Another new series coming is “Boomerang”, which is based off the movie Eddie Murphy starred in back in 1982. Lena Waithe and Halle Berry are producing it. Insta-Famous star Lala Milan is starring in it, along with “Everybody Hates Chris” star Tequan Richmond.

AND My new favorite, “Raq Rants”, which features TMZ reporter Raquel Harper . She interviews celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Nick Cannon, and many more.

Now don’t get me wrong, they’ve had original content before such as “106 & Park”, “Rap City”, “College Hill”, and of course “Being Mary Jane” but once MJ stopped airing, the original content slowed but I’m glad to see them back doing they thang!!

What are some of y’all favorite newer BET shows?
