Teyana Taylor “The Album” Review

Teyana released her anticipated lengthy album a week ago on Friday June 19th and she definitely made up for the seven song KTSE album. After taking a full week to listen to the 23 track album, I can give a legit review. Teyana has been on an incline for the past 2-6 years from acting in the VH1 show Hit The Floor, to her album VII in 2014, then KTSE in 2018.

This album starts off with the audio of her giving birth to her first child Junie, in which her husband Iman helped deliver in their bathroom. You can hear the excitement and emotion from him and it’s a tear-jerker just listening to it. The next song “Come Back To Me” has a vocals from Junie and a Rick Ross feature. This song is special because it’s something that everyone has dealt with– a relationship or situationship that could or could not be meant for you, but if that person is meant to be with you then he or she will come back into your life.

She has a lot of female influences on this album such as featuring Erykah Badu on “Low Key” which is paying homage to her song “Next Lifetime”. Another influence was Blaque’s song “808” in her song “Boomin;” “Ever Ever” which is a Lauryn Hill “Sweetest Thing” sample; “Try Again” –clearly an Aaliyah & Timberland sample; and “How Do U Want It” is sampled from Total and Mase’ “What You Want.”

A few others include “Friends,” sampled from Musiq Souldchild’s “Just Friends.” “Made It” has the Juvenile “Back That Azz Up” sample. The last song on the album was sampled from a 1970s group called The YoungHearts and their song “We Got Love.”

One of Teyana’s powerful songs is “Still”; in a recent interview she said it’s not about wanting love from someone but instead being Black in America and crying/wanting for love, hope and peace. Majority of the album is about love, relationship ups and downs and happiness of course. She did not disappoint with the album and you can tell she put her best songs on this thang.

Wale “The Imperfect Storm” EP

Wale doesn’t stop working! He dropped his newest EP on Friday June 19th, ironically Juneteenth. The album addresses the current state of the word, which is police killing innocent black PEOPLE, the uproar it’s causing and the lack of justice that needs to be served. His first song “Movin Different” has excerpts from the news reporting on protests. His next song “Empty Wishing Well” featuring amazing vocals from Eric Bellinger. The song is about everyday things with a touch of lovey dovey in there. “Blue Yellow Green Pink White” has the Cha Cha Slide” sample, which is a given that this song is more of a dance upbeat record; it reminds me of “Debbie” on the Wow…That’s Crazy album.

“JUNE 5th / QueenZnGodZ” speaks on what happened on that day a few weeks ago; more protests and justice still not being served. The best verse in this song is

“We the sports and the music, do the math we the culture.”

He talks about the Karens of the world and the popular excerpt from Tamika Mallory’s speech not long ago–

“I don’t give a damn if they burn down Target because Target should be in the streets like us.”

That was in response to Rayshard Brooks being killed. The song then goes into the “QueenZnGodz” song states that we, women are Queens and the Men are Gods, which is really mythological.

“Shit Don’t Stop” is another banger with Eric Bellinger; Wale talks on him still being here on earth is due to someone praying for him because it’s so much going on in the world and the odds are against him, a black man. The next song “Maajo” is another upbeat dance record but Wale briefly talks about COVID, people wearing masks and even The Last Dance.

Overall, this was a great EP especially since he dropped his last album back in October, which didn’t disappoint. Wale has a way with staying current with the times and keeping a sense of relevance to a dedicated, intimate fan base. He may not seem mainstream and may even be underappreciated, but the real fans of his know what’s up.

What’s your thoughts on the new EP?

Kehlani “It Was Good Until It Wasn’t” Album Review

Kehlani dropped her 3rd album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t and per usual, she didn’t disappoint. From features with Jhene Aiko and Lucky Daye to her dope interludes and outro.

Kehlani is one of those artists who isn’t 100% mainstream but you know who she is. She hasn’t had a top 10 or 20 song on the charts but she’s still respected. Yes, she’s been brought up in the media mainly for her relationships with Kyrie Irving, then PARTNEXTDOOR, and as recently as YG. But don’t let her relationships overshadow her great music, if anything let them be motivation for you to listen to her music and find out some tea on why the relationships didn’t last.

Light Bulb GIFs | Tenor

Anywho, the titles of the song are self-explanatory. “Toxic” is about being in a toxic relationship or situationship; “Change Your Life” is about changing a man or woman’s (because Kehlani is sexually fluent) life and uplifting them and making things more positive for them.

Can we talk about the skit “Belong to the Streets” and how it goes into “Everybody Business?” It’s plain and simple; people will talk crazy about you without even knowing the whole situation in which they are talking about. Prime example, her past relationships and people saying she cheated on Kyrie with PARTY. “I Hate The Club” is about hating the club but wanting to go because you want to see someone you’re interested in. Every other song is straightforward. What was special about this album was her “Outro” freestyle song, which is by her friend and artist Lexii Alijai who passed away suddenly earlier this year. She was also on Kehlani’s 2015 mixtape You Should Be Here.

Kehlani and Lexii Alijai - May 2017 | Kehlani, Kehlani parrish ...

For those who aren’t fans of Kehlani, can you give her a chance before judging her by her past relationships? She may be a toxic Taurus but she makes GOOD music and deserves some credit that she doesn’t receive.

If you listened to the album, what are your thoughts?

Not-So Mainstream Artists Who We Should Cherish

It may sound weird, but I love the artists that aren’t mainstream. Often at times, when artists become mainstream, they create music that tailors towards the radio. Producers, songwriters, writers, etc know how to create a song strictly tailored towards the radio. You do have some artists that are so hot, that when they drop a single that isn’t a radio song, it doesn’t matter because they have such a huge following, that no matter what they produce and drop as a single, people are going to gravitate towards it, such as Meg Thee Stallion’s B.I.T.CH record. CLEARLY, that song isn’t meant to be on the radio but since it got so much attention on social media, Meg and her team edited it down to be radio-friendly.

BUT, there are artists who make poppin music, who’s poppin on Apple Music, YouTube, Instagram, etc but their music doesn’t get much play on the radio; those are the artists to cherish and watch out for. These artists are the ones who make that unique music, that different shit, that “I wanna clean the house, write in my journal, and reflect” music. Here’s a list of those dope artists:

Xavier Omar

Okayplayer.com

He’s been making some dope music  for a while now. His biggest hits on Apple Music are “Afraid”, “Runnin’ Round”, and “Blind Man”. I love his sound and he’s one of the artists that you want to keep near and dear to you without them being mainstreamed and their sounding changing for radio standards.

Snoh Aalegra

Ms. Aalegra is getting noticed out here. She does have one song on an r&b station but she’s not 100% mainstream. Snoh is Swedish and she crossed over to American music. Her popular songs are “Woah” and “I Want You Around” which is on the radio. She’s becoming more noticed and more than likely will become full mainstream by the end of the year.

Kiana Lede

Hypebae.com

This lady has been singing covers on YouTube for years now; (that’s how she got my attention.) Some of her most viewed covers was “Come and See Me” mixed with “Location”, “Hotline Bling” and “White Iverson.” She just made her way into mainstream with her single “Ex”. Her latest song is “Forfeit” but it’s not on the radio. Kiana should be recognized because she’s been working her ass off, making herself noticeable for years now. GO KIANA!

Alina Baraz

Alina Alina. She’s a Ukrainian artist born in the US and she makes that sensual sexy music. She’s been lowkey on the scene since 2015. Some of her best hits are “Electric” featuring Khalid, “Fantasy”, and “Floating” featuring Khalid again. She has an album coming out this year in which she’s released music from it. Her music hasn’t made its way to a radio in my city (St. Louis) but she’s an artist who’s going to go far even if her music doesn’t make it to the radio.

Nao

Dazed.com

Nao is another great artist who’s sound is just as melodic as the above artists. Her popular songs  include “Another Lifetime”, “Bad Blood”, and “Orbit”. She hasn’t released any new music since her last album Saturn. 🗣WHERE YOU AT NAO??

Victoria Monet

Hawtcelebs.com

Victoria has been recognizably making music for 5 years but her music has been generating in Apple Music playlists and more streaming sites for some time now. Her single “Ass Like That” is personally one of my favs. Another one of her reason singles is “Moment”.
Sometimes when you hear the same artists on the radio, you get over them real quick and you want to listen to something different. Try listening to these artists and if you’re already to listening to them, keep it up and support them.

Comment your favorite song by these artists if you’re already fans.

“The Photograph”: Generational Behavior

Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield starred in the romantic comedy The Photograph and it was a beautiful love story, but with a deeper meaning.

Mae, played by Issa Rae, lost her mother at the start of the movie. She didn’t know much about her mom’s life until she left her a letter explaining things. Mae’s mother Christina was invested in her work and less into love and emotion. She didn’t show much emotion around Mae and in her defense….it was because her mother didn’t show her much love.

When Christina, played by Chante Adams, was dating Mae’s father Issac, played by Y’lan Noel, her mother discouraged her from dating him because he was content where he was in life and wasn’t making much money. Her mother gave her the impression that she needed to be with someone who could take care of her…so she could move out the house. Christina’s mother told her she was getting too old to be living with her. That is what pushed her to move out the house, better yet the state and pursue her photography career in New York. Christina’s mother lacked emotion with her and felt that being taken care was more important than love.

Once Christina had Mae, of course she’s going to teach her daughter what was mimicked to her, which is how to NOT properly love someone and somewhat be scared of commitment. Since Mae wasn’t shown much love as a kid, the feeling of commitment scared her. Mae said she broke up with a guy because he proposed to her. She is/was more content with living in the moment and not being married. She had a change of heart eventually once she got to know Michael, played by LaKeith Stanfield. He and Mae connected when was doing a story on a man who worked in the oil industry during the oil spill and he came across pictures shot by Mae’s mother and even a picture of her. The guy used to date Mae’s mother Christina. Michael was intrigued by Christina’s photos that he decided to find more of her images, and when he did, that’s how he met Mae.

When Christina passed away, she left Mae a long letter and another to give to her father. Mae learned so much about her mother in a letter, than she learned about her her whole life. In the letter, she found out who her real father was and their love story. The man whom she thought was her father, wasn’t and the man who is her father was the man whom Michael did a story on, Isaac– hence, the reason why he had a picture of Christina in his home. Unfortunately, Isaac didn’t know that Mae was his daughter but they started to form a relationship towards the end of the movie. Christina had left her hometown in Louisiana to pursue a career in photography in New York. She left without telling Isaac and months later when she returned for her mother’s funeral, Issac had married someone else (HOW QUICK IS THAT!)

Where the generational behavior comes into play is the fact that Christina’s mother didn’t really seem affectionate with Mae and showed her tough love. Don’t get me wrong, tough love is fine but when it’s more tough love than affectionate love, that can have a long term affect on you and how you raise your children. Christina lacked some form of emotion when it came to her relationship with Mae, due to the way her mother was with her. Mae recalled a time when she was going away to school and her mom was too busy to take her to the airport. Mae’s step father told her that when he came home from dropping her off at the airport, Mae was crying in a corner because she was sad to see Mae go but she had a hard time showing emotion and was not good at goodbyes. Her mother was also a workaholic and expressed in her letter to Mae, “I wish I was as good at love than I am about working;” meaning, her mother was more into her work than she was with being present and transparent in her relationships with people such as Mae and even Isaac.

where-i-look.com

Luckily Mae learned from her mother’s mishaps in relationships and decided to break the generational disconnect of loving someone and showing it with Michael. This movie is a prime example of “be who you want your children to be.” Tell them to learn from you mistakes and show them how. Leaving your child lost and left with question is not the way to go. Don’t hold back, show them love, be transparent with them.
